After I had the HPFP replaced I started using Hotshots additive. At roughly the same time I had my oil changed at the dealer and the knucklehead mechanic spilled oil all over the driver side engine compartment (That’s another frustrating story).

Initially there was a distinct synthetic burning smell that I thought was coming from the oil burning off the exhaust and other hot parts. The smell started to go away but I also started using the Hotshots off and on, less and less.

Fast forward to Friday, I decided to use the additive before a desert trip towing my camper. There is no doubt that the smell is coming from the Hotshots.

Has anyone else experience this?

Nope. I use HotShots on every fill up. Don't smell anything.

No and I use it in all of our diesels… ecodiesel, Cummins, tdi. The smell when I get it on my hands is pretty yuck - but once it’s in the tank no smell…

There should be no place under the hood that is even possible to smell it…. If you have a fuel like that’s leaking- that would be the only source… but would think that would be obvious.

I will add- our dealer likes to coat the entire drivers side of the motor bay when changing the filter too…. And the frame rail-inside and out…. It’s ridiculous.

never had a smell with full tank diesel only or a full tank with hotshots added. I agree with @Escape.idiocracy , there shouldn't be a smell in the engine compartment.

My exhaust on a Cold morning startup smells sweet like Cotton Candy ?. Might be the DEF fluid going through a cycle.

I dont get it, but sometimes in the morning, I pop the fuel cap and take a deep breath to get my day started with some power. Works with VP and Turbo Blue as well.

Come to think of it, this might explain some things. :surprised:

My thoughts exactly. no signs of obvious leaks.

I will say the stuff makes a noticeable difference in performance and fuel economy.

But wouldn’t a message come up on my dash when regen? What smell?
There are two kinds of regen, active with a light and passive, no light just high EGT’s.

iDash or any jscan with it up on the phone, are good tools (probably more? ) to monitor EGT’s and soot load.

We are at 30k and have only had the light come on for a regen once- around 4k miles…. And this Jeep is the short trip champion…. Once/twice a week it gets an hour one way highway haul. (Not bragging, I know it will show its face through long term wear. Regardless of how others feel I should spend my money, I choose the diesel…. Because decomposed dinosaur bones….)

My dealership’s (although, I don’t feel like I have a dealer anymore) tech (senior guy too) completely covered the driver side of the truck in oil then didn’t torque the filter. Then I went to change it for the first time myself and spilled zero oil. There’s a gd cup that catches the oil. I don’t understand this issue these people have. I’m not taking my truck back to a dealer accept for warranty work and only that begrudgingly.

I've done two oil changes myself without any spills. First thing I do is crack open the filter, then go down and remove the drain plug. Giving it a few minutes while I prep the new filter, and new oil jugs. I then pull the filter out of the housing and replace with the new, replace the drain plug then add oil.
