Is it just me, or is the cruise control horrible?

Really NOT impressed with the cruise control. Especially in somewhat hilly environments, the speed varies +/- as much as 5mph from set point and the tranny does a lot of hunting.
Is this normal, or does my CC need dealer adjustment?
We have a 2024 Sahara with the 4 cylinder and a 22 Gladiator with the 6 cylinder. It's more difficult for the 2.0 to hold highway speeds because of the lower torque (without jumping into the turbo. So it takes a little while to recover. Compare that to the 3.6 in the gladiator and the higher torque at highway speeds recovers much better. I find the 3.6 much better at cruising on the highway, especially in hilly areas...

I used speed control daily to commute to work at 114 mi RT. Study speed at 75 mi hr it does change 1-2 speed lower if I am going upward/dwnward. The tranny sounds the same to me. I have a 2023 diesel gladiator. But I do notice if I’m at 55 mi hr radar sign shows me at 54 mi hr.

Yes it hilly smaller roads I find it has to vary too much especially when it is set below speeds of 50mph. If it is level and below 50mph no problem but if hilly it want to let it lug then kick down and take off like a shot then back off etc...

No, this isn't normal.

My cruise control keeps speed within +/- 0-1 MPH.

I suspect there might be several culprits:
  1. Have you mounted larger tires without regearing? Having your gearing off will strain the transmission and cause it to downshift constantly
  2. Are you constantly carrying a heavy load? This might be putting added strain on the power train and/or the drive train. Especially if you set the cruise control at high speeds
  3. These vehicles are just not very happy at speeds above 70 MPH. Setting the cruise control at 75 MPH, for instance, will cause the engine and transmission to struggle to keep the set speed
  4. Have you lifted the truck and added bigger/wider tires? This will increase significant frontal area and add drag. This drag grows exponentially as you add speed, further exacerbating item 3 above
There might be other culprits at play, but these are the ones that come to mind.

Good luck.

I wish more people on the highway used CC, around here the roads are loaded with subarus who CANNOT maintain a constant speed.

So instead of continually adjusting, I just set it to 65, and it's so funny because sometimes I'm blowing past traffic and sometimes I'm the slow dude. Drivers around here are ridiculous!

edit: the only time I have trouble maintaining CC speed on a hill is a very steep hill with a 25 MPH speed limit
You must live near me.... in southern PA 🤣

24' Mojave .... w/ Adaptive Cruise

Haven't noticed any issues but most of our trips have been local within 1-1.5 hour drives.

We'll be making a longer trip in a couple weeks.

We absolutely LOVE the Adaptive Cruise...it works awesome!!

i like the adaptive cruise control; hills do wear it out a bit. Honestly I think every vehicle I’ve driven except 1 ton unloaded diesels seems to work overtime on hills with cruise control on.

My JT is new, 1500 miles. Added running boards is only thing not stock, so far No heavy loads.. My CC issues are at 55-60 mph. I have the ACC, but haven’t tried it.

My CC works fine, I drive a 74-mile RT in rolling hills around the lake. It generally maintains the speed without hunting for gears. It does go up and down depending on the hill.

I am driving a 21 JTSD with 35s, steel bumpers with a winch, and a bed rack loaded with gear.

The Cruise Control in a JL or JT is no different than any other vehicle. First, they all say not to use them in hilly or mountainous terrain. It's good advice. Any vehicle with six or eight speed transmissions are going to see a lot of up and down shifting unless driving on flat terrain. The JT has some weaknesses, but the CC isn't one of them in my book.

My cruise control works perfect. Now my speed limiter gets mouthy at times.

2023 Rubicon 3.6... zero issues with cruise, even on the Colorado passes, both up and downhill.

If you don’t like the cruise control in an automatic you should try it in a manual. It holds speed ok until you need to down shift, then disengages. Annoying as hell. I’ve never had CC behave like that in any other manual Tran’s cars that I’ve owned or driven. But on fairly flat terrain, it works fine.
