Post was about transFER case, not transMISSION
For me the same "rule" applies - recommended fluid, not something with a fancy name or designer color.

I use only good quality ATF+4 that meets the MOPAR specs for their own fluid.

I've followed a similar rule for every vehicle I've ever owned with a transfer case - what the book says or what meets the same specs that the recommended fluid meets, nothing of any fancy color or name.

The problem is mixing fluid types. Don’t risk it. You’re not draining all the fluid by doing a pan drop. And a flush risks dislodging things and killing your tranny.

Yeah, I did the Mopar 8-9 speed tranny fluid with the filter/fluid change. With the transfer case I'm pretty sure you can be a little more lax. Or am I showing my age and stuck in the olden golden age where that logic applies? On a side note..I found a Warn 8274 winch on Eday. My first 4x4 truck had one on it and I many a car/truck did I pull out of ditches with that workhorse.

No.

Why is everyone wanting to do all of this maintenance ahead of schedule, but then insist on not using the fluid that ZF says you should use in their transmissions?
You can never ever get all of the fluid out. I just plain see no point in risking it and no other fluid is "better" except in marketing and forum posts.
100% this.

Either way. Mopar fluid. Not worth the risk to your multi thousand dollar t-case.

About to get my ZF8 transmission oil changed and bought Amsoil ATF (which I used for a DIY Trans Case change last year).

There's a lot of opinions on using Amsoil ATF for the ZF8. I don't want to start a debate about it here as there are many threads already but I will ask "Can I use Amsoil?" My 2020 is of course out of warranty.

I'm also thinking its a good time to upgrade my transmission pan to the a PPE pan.
Many of the basic considerations on ATF for the automatic transmission are covered in post #40 in a different thread. I also suggest reading that entire thread.

Service Intervals

The 1st link in Post #40 includes advice on NORMAL and SEVERE service intervals. The service intervals are based on ZF guidance (NORMAL), and 40% to 50% of the ZF mileage (SEVERE).

Advantages & Disadvantages

- Advantage of using MOPAR or other ZF-approved ATF equivalent: 100% same chemistry / additive package
- Disadvantage of using MOPAR or other ZF-approved ATF equivalent: For DIY, no warranty on damage to other parts

- Advantage of using AMSOIL (or other aftermarket ATF with similar warranty terms): Warranty on damage to other parts
- Disadvantage of using AMSOIL (or other aftermarket ATF with similar warranty terms): Chemistry / additive package is at least slightly different and mixing of ATF brands is permanent

Warranty

The only way to get a (24-month) warranty on transmission service (from MOPAR/dealer) is to have it done at a dealer. The latest price range for this service is $1,200 to $1,500 (U.S. dollars). The dealer performs what is essentially a pan drop, using all new parts.

If you use AMSOIL, contact them to inquire about warranty coverage in Canada. I would get a statement in writing / by email (from a manager) that says that their warranty, published online, will be in full force in your specific case (vehicle, location, mileage, NORMAL or SEVERE use). As you know, the U.S. has strong consumer protection laws. AMSOIL heavily references the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act on their warranty web page, but this law only applies in the U.S.

Testing

In any case, I recommend pulling a sample of your used ATF, and having it tested, just before servicing your transmission to document it's condition. Guidance on testing is available at the 4th link in post #40 of the other thread.

Valvoline ATF+4 is about the cheapest licensed fluid you will find. Both Walmart and Amazon carry it for the same price.

Just a FYI, any brand that carries the "ATF+4" on their label has to be a licensed fluid. ATF+4 also has a very specific viscosity range that most of the other "universal" fluids are either too thick or too thin and is not usually recommended for ATF+4 applications. Not hyper critical for a transfer case or manual transmission but is for an automatic that calls it out.,

Sorry took so long to get back on this. When i bought my Gladdy last September it had 117,450 miles on it. As I begin changing fluids, it became obvious the previous owner was a get in it and drive.
Now I usually change fluids on any used vehicle I buy, but I'm pretty darn sure none of the service I am doing is anywhere near ahead of schedule, but rather way behind. 👍
