A "get by" "fix", hoping for it not causing more severe damage down the road.

But as I have other vehicles I can use, mine would be parked. So there is that difference.
I "know" a cam rotting should not cause other issues, but there are enough "stories" out there, and knowing how picky the other components like phasers and so on are, paranoia does enter in.
I've yet to "see" or witness other damage that was directly caused by a cam or follower (or lifter in the past) going to crap, but....................
I also missed the bit (why I hate using a phone, I almost always use the laptop or Chromebook except early mornings and certain other times) where this was a stop-gap measure. I caught the part of the axle, per dealer agreement, though, and for that, hope it goes through.

I see too many doing DIY "repairs" believing you replace only what's toast - ignore the rest. You don't have to go back over a couple of weeks to see just that sort of thing. And for them, it was a repair, not a stop-gap measure.

You guys should meet up and arm wrestle to sort this out.

I’m going with ā€œ my Jeep, my decisionā€. I’m sure he knows more about it than anyone else in the world but in the end it’s my decision. I need transportation so I did what I had to do. The service manager at my dealership said he would do the same thing if it was him.

The axle assembly. was also backordered but is now expected in another week or so. The cams still have no ETA as of a week ago. I didn’t want to do the job twice but it really isn’t bad at all. I bought the timing tools and changed the other one in about 7-8 hours, I’m old and slow now. The worst part of the job is removing the battery tray but getting it out of the way was worth the extra time. The Jeep runs absolutely great now, smooth as silk. How long remains to be seen. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø
Here’s a better shot of the cam, 3rd lobe from the rear on right side.

LOL - maybe let it run and save the parts when they come in?!?!?

That's one of the worst lobes I've seen - save for totally round ones years ago in legacy V8s. The other one is scored a bit.

It's worth the time to remove "stuff" that prevents easily getting to that bank, IMO. I've done too many things thinking I was saving time by not removing something partially in the way. I later regretted that decision.

I’ve heard camshaft backorders can take weeks or even months, depending on the engine. Try calling other dealerships, some might have one in stock.
We tried that. The few that have them are holding onto them for their own customers if needed. I did see a kit, with the new part number, for sale on ebay last week. They only wanted $950 for it. It retails for about $650. Opportunist maybe?šŸ¤”

Mine was fast tracked from customer care, but still took almost 6 weeks. Picked it up, drove it 7mi home and it was knocking. Brought it back that day. The next day they replaced cam phasers and oil control valve. I went to pick it up, but was sent home with a loaner. The tech took it for a test drive and it was misfiring. That was all Monday and Tuesday this last week. Thursday was told no update on what is wrong and no word since. Something during the install went wrong and they should never have let me get it on Monday. It was silent on startup for me, but guessing they just parked it out back after the test drive and didn’t think to listen before shutting it off. I had the top down and when I got home I knew it wasn’t right. I purposefully left it running when I brought it back so they could hear. The tech said everyone in there heard it and knew it was bad. At this point I won’t be surprised if they say I need a new engine this next week.

Engines, yes, but spare parts?
That could be a different animal than production line parts.

Engines for 24 and later are US "made".

Kind of surprised the aftermarket hasn't stepped up here. They could sell tons to wieners who aren't even having problems as "preventative" lol

I do wonder if this whole cam thing is a metallurgical issue, as in an issue with the supplied raw material. I know in recent past in an adjacent field (marine industry) manufacturers were having issues with SS supplied not being up to snuff, ie, rusting, failing strength tests, etc. so much so that one manufacturer wrote that they were conducting studies on hardware purchased from different manufacturers in order to try to track down
the material issue to a specific supplier. Before someone says it, yes , I know some SS will rust. Now I didn’t hear the final results of these tests but the ongoing theory from the manufacturer was that the raw material they’re getting from Asia isn’t always up to specs as to what they say it is.

Just food for thought…..
The service mgr at my local Jeep shop said he thinks it's steel quality. During covid it was hard to find and they were probably taking whatever they could get.

Mine was built just prior to this and several older than mine had this situation. I think( here we go again) it has nothing to do steel quality . I think it is the manufacturing process itself . How they are hardened them and the cam followers.

Mine was built pre Covid. Still no update on an ETA on the part.
