Looking for your opinion and thoughts on using 5W-30 in my gladiator to help with the tapping and longevity of the engine.

I ran 5w-30 in my 19 JLU and 21 JT, both with the 3.6L PUG. I did not notice any difference in drivability, temps, oil pressure, etc.

The engines seemed a little quieter. I liked having a little more film strength. I would run it again with no worries. I'm considering the new M1 0w-30 ESP for my current JTM.

I have run heavier grades to include 5W-40 without issue. That being said, if you already have tapping, masking it with a heavier grade is not going to solve whatever the underlying problem you currently have.

Yes and no opinion yet ;)

I had the rocker/lifter replacement, tested the first "fresh and full mileage" oil change with 0w-20 and had higher than average particulates, but not in a bad amount yet. Did 5w-30 over the summer months, tested and particulates had dropped a significant amount to lower than average on some counts. With Montana winter here I'm back to 0w-20 for the thinner cold start and for a comparison when I test it in the spring/early summer.

So no opinion right now, the 5w-30 may have improved my protection or I may just be on a filtering trend since the rocker/lifter work and the next 0w-20 test may show the same particulate level. I didn't notice a sound or temp difference between the 2, I would need to track those numbers empirically to see a difference probably. I would just say, do your own tests if you decide to change weights, it's really the only reliable way to know if there's an improvement.

You want quiet?? Just put a can of STP in it,,,LOL.. I remember the days of Castoil 20-50 racing with a can of STP. that oil filled the gap,,LOL

Just turned 20k mi on my 23 Mojave and switched to 5w30 . Definitely quieter right at start up but otherwise no discernable difference. Unless you live somewhere really cold it really isn't going to matter much.

Our family runs 5w30 engine oil in all four (4) of our 3.6 engines. We change them every 3000 miles and never had an engine failure. But we do live in hot as hell Arizona. If I lived in Fairbanks, then it would be 0w20. Just common sense!

“Random guy” here to weigh in on a data point I gathered when switching one time to 5/30 from 0/20. I have an oil catch can and would regularly see 250ml of oil in there every 5000 kms (3000 miles) on 0/20. When I switched (one time) to 5/30 and ran that same distance, the oil in the catch can was only 150ml, dropping 100ml.

Gotta hand it to two members here, @StanH for running over 140k + miles, only on 0/20 and you couldn’t pay him enough to switch up and then there’s @Hootbro for running 40 weight oil and doing quite well from his oil analysis reports. That’s all random guy has to say.

with 0w-20 and had higher than average particulates, but not in a bad amount yet. Did 5w-30 over the summer months, tested and particulates had dropped a significant amount to lower than average on some counts.
and that could be due to the change in the oil chemistry, not viscosity.
If you buy a 0w20 and a 5w30 from the same company, there will be variations that alone can account for analysis changes - as well as your own engine age, driving, loads, temps and so on.

so far, there's no data that is able to show that a change in viscosity alone does anything - because people also change either brands, or even if the same brand, the chemistry will be different.
So at this point - it's literally impossible to test for the change in viscosity alone

You can find at least two people in the Wrangler areas who had cam failures - and ran heavier oil. Their conclusion was a shrug - oh, well, guess it wasn't that.

All I'm saying is - meh, there's no evidence of anything, and there is at least some evidence (although limited cases) where viscosity just didn't matter.
(and millions on the road doing well may suggest something?)

I'm in the 5W30 crowd in my 3.6L.

Been running it for years now on a new/reman motor and the oil analysis results have been great.
Same for me - with 0w20

So the point is? Maybe there is no point LOL
