12 isn't half the typical mpg even with a bone stock 3.6L JT if you actually drive freeway speeds. Might average 18-19 if you aren't remotely aggressive. Lift and big tires like many of us and it's 13-14 on the freeway at 80mph anyway so why not have 200 more hp.
I have a 2.5 lift and 35's and average is 16-19 . Not very many people are crazy enough to drive 80 in WV for at least 5 months out of the year unless you want to be plucking a harp and sprouting wings. Mostly People drive 70-75 on out best freeway I-79 when weather is nice.

Freeway speeds are 70 - so drop your own area type thinking a bit. It's not 80+ around most of the country.

Around urban areas, it's 55-65. I recall around Indianapolis when I went through to Ohio, the limit was 55 and no one passed me.
I get 18 with this gawd-awful heavy, fender flares are wind scoops Mojave.
I got 21 with my Overland - yes, on the highways. Driving around Florida, we got 21-22 without much issue. (it's flat most of where we were)

I'd have to try hard to get under 16 or 15. I exceed that even with my driving.
I'm by nature/wiring, an aggressive driver. (years ago, it was a ticket a month, and a few years prior to that, the magistrate knew me by full name and "what is it this time". Even some of the troopers knew my name - not because we were buddies. So, I know aggressive driving.

That's just it - someone has to realize that their speeds just wont' work in many other places. Fine for where they are, but here, it would be automatic license suspension.

Even at 65-70 with 3.5" of lift and 37s it's 14mpg at best. I realize my speed doesn't help, but out here you get pased by semis if you're under 75mph and in AZ half of them are rolling 80+. The lift and tires don't help either. I still argue that more adequate power for my harder than most use wouldn't hurt mpg at all and on roadtrips it would likely help. If that power comes from boost or a v8 swap, either way it's going to downshift less and therefore run lower average rpms in my experience. Obviously when I'm out playing with all of that extra 150 wheel hp the mileage will be crap... but it's already crap if I'm using all 215 wheel hp and spinning the 3.6L up to 6k rpm.

This is driving county roads at 55-65. Fortunately I drive a company car for work so I don't really care but even if I hyper-miled this thing it wouldn't touch 16 mpg.

I wasn’t talking about a Jeep. Normal off topic stuff here. I later clarified.
I meant half typical MPG for all vehicles on the road.

I get better than that dragging my trailer around all weekend 😄

70-72 on the interstate, I can average 18-19MPG on my typical driving. Alot of back road driving (55-65) I can get deep into the 19's no problem.

But I digress. Id take more HP and suck down a little more gas with little concern about it 😄

Personally, I'd give the supercharger a spin (pun intended) if my goals were same as OP. But the pact I've made with myself is to just accept the Glad for what it is. Warts and all.

UNLESS I'm one of the unlucky few to get the dreaded tick of death. As I have no warranty - at that point it's new engine time. And if I'm shelling out bucks for a new motor - no way I'm putting that ticking time bomb back under the hood.

At that point, AMW will be getting a call.

And I must confess......a part of me is hoping for the tick of death 😜

Man.....I haven't seen 16 since.....well.....I've NEVER seen 16 😂

Maybe it's the 35's. Maybe it's the mountains I live in. Maybe it's my right foot. Maybe its all of the above. But 14's 'bout as good as it gets for me. Usually 13 something.

But economy wasn't the reason I bought the Glad so I'm not complaining.

I wished for another cracked header on my I6 for a motor swap. The 6th one did it and I’m not lying 😆

Would love to see a build thread on the SC. I’m on the fence between leaving it stock, SC, or adding a V8. I’m hoping as the next generation of Jeep comes out the cost to swap a V8 in the JL will become cheaper. With Dakota customs gone trying to do an affordable swap seems impossible.

In this case, I wonder if adding a bit more torque to the thing might keep it out of high valve lift mode a bit more - maybe? Interesting idea.
When mine is paid off, I will put a 5.7 in it. I love the sound of a V-8 and that is the main reason. I know it's immature but I retire in 4 years and it's all up hill from there. Or is it downhill. I don't know but I will have fun either way.

I experimented with the manual shift on my last trip and it worked well but at what rpm are you downshifting? And what happens when you forget to downshift at a stop? Does it take over and downshift for you? When I had a true manual it was easier to guage when to downshift.
Ok so as you roll to a stop the trans will slowly downshift to 1st, but then you can upshift to 2nd that’s designed for taking off in snow and get a smoother takeoff then just go back to auto, or upshift quickly at 2,000 rpm’s. If I do that I can get 20+ mpg city, depending upon how many red lights. If I need to use half throttle or more an no rpm’s rise, then I’ll downshift as many as it takes to accelerate moderately at 1/3 throttle. This trans works very well, the 8 speed in my Colorado would still downshift too soon and often in manual mode. He Jeeps holds the higher gear till at least 2/3 throttle. Then wow look out! There’s a lot of nice engine noises with reasonable acceleration for such a small engine in a 4,800 lbs brick. Especially compared with the 3.9 Magnum V6, 5 speed I had in my 2003 Dakota 4x4, with 3:98 gearing. That was fine at the time but got only 16-20 mpg. But had decent low rpm torque, for towing. That could hold 55-65 uphill on Rt 80 PA hills in 4th gear at 3,200 rpm, without getting over 198 degrees coolant. While fully loaded to 10,450 lbs CGVW towing a 16’ inclosed UHAUL trailer loaded with 50, 60 lbs knockdown picnic tables, plus 12 more covered in the bed. I’m pretty sure the Gladiator could do the same amount of work, but at a much higher rpm.

Will be following, I would really like the V8 but still struggling with 30k+. If I could install either the Ripp or the Maggy for say 8k then drop it off at Liverious up the road for a tune. Might be the way to go.

Looking forward to seeing your install.
