Running Hotter and Losing Coolant

This thread scares me. My coolant seems to always be a little low. My Jeep doesn't run hot (yet) but I've had to add a little coolant the last few months. I'll have to get out and give it a thorough inspection to see if there's a leak. My greatest fear with my Jeep is engine issues.

To be honest, that was my fear when I had lower miles. Now that I’m over 86k, it’s somewhat freeing. If I need to repower it before 200k, oh well I guess. The engine, trans, and t-case have been rock solid reliable so far, even though I get some smells under HEAVY load. Heavy load for me means on the way up a 7% grade with a trailer, at 7k-10k feet above sea level.

@WILDHOBO I forget, do you have the Mishimoto coolant tank too? Mine is sitting in the house waiting for their low temp thermostat to arrive before I do the switch.

Running at 25mph in deep sand on Off Road+ mode I found myself shifting manually to keep the motor in the 3K range. The truck kept wanting to hang in 2nd but that made the temps skyrocket.


The guy with the 392 JLUR I talked to at the air station said he had the same issue- ran hot as hell and smelled horrible.

What's remarkable to me is the transmission temp stayed right around 197-200 the entire time but the oil and coolant were well above water boiling at sea level (which is where I was in spite of the ORP page telling me I was 45 feet over it. lol )

I just put the Mishimoto tank in on Saturday. It had been sitting for months during the body repairs. I wanted to see if I lost coolant on the towing drive Sunday and Monday. I think the smell is decreased, but not gone. And I don’t appear to have lost a milliliter.

What’s the deal with the low temp thermostat? My oil was also super hot, but coolant and transmission stayed under control. Thanks.

I haven’t found the leak, and it’s definitely less smell after 9 hours over the mountains either a trailer, with the new aluminum reservoir. But it’s not gone.

5 years 86k here. And it has forever.

I got some surf fishing in today on Assateague Island and ran the full length of the OSV zone to the MD-VA line. We don't have any deserts in Maryland so the National Seashore was my testing ground.

On the sand I never dropped below 215 and held consistently in the 223-229 range. At the high point it smelled horrible. I stopped, popped the hood and let it idle down to get it to 190. I can't imagine how hot this would run in the heat of the desert.

I hovered around the speed limit of 25 on most of it but did open to about 40mph a couple times on the most desolate part to get air moving through the grille. After my stop above I popped the hood latches and left it open slightly to allow for some of the heat to escape until I got off the sand and aired back up.

I had a leak down and pressure test done yesterday and per the dealer there was "nothing wrong."

@JeepCares I'm more than a little concerned about the long term effects of all this heat on the motor, especially since running in sand is what it's designed to do.
