285 is the section width of the tire in mms.
75 is the aspect ratio of sidewall (the sidewall distance from the wheel rim to the outside of the tread is 75% of the section width).
18 is the diameter of the wheel in inches.
I used my stock overland wheels and ran a 285/75-18 ridge grappler. They are 35's, which surprised me because I had always thought 285 was 33. They key here is that they are 11.5 inches wide and no added offset on the wheel. There may be 1/2" of fire sticking out and no rubbing.

285 x .75 = mm of section width. X 2 is the total width section on both sides of wheel. Convert to inches is 16.7 inches, + wheel size, 18 is 34.6285 is the section width of the tire in mms.
