My Overland with auto and tow package according to the WEB SITE - payload is -pretty close, maybe on, haven't looked for a while - but the TOWING is off.

Seems like it may be pretty accurate.

Consider this, the advertised tow ratings are going to be on the conservative side because of liability and common sense. They advertise 7000 on the JTR and 6000 on your Overland. Reality is the actual numbers are a few hundred pounds higher without counting drivers and passengers, but the average Joe isn’t going to say to themselves “okay, it’s 7400 minus my weight and the weight of my gear so I can tow 7090lbs”. In fact if they said 7400, must people will say “my trailer weighs 7600lbs, that’s only 200 extra, no biggie” when in fact it puts them closer to 500 over.
Anyrate, yours is 6331 but after taking into account you and the wife, your right around the 6000 advertised rating.
(Of course having 600 on the tongue for towing that without WD or stiffer springs was another issue from the other thread, right?)

Wow, interesting thread. After seeing what you guys are posting, I checked the Mopar web site numbers for my Sport S w/towing. My owners manual says 6,000 lbs, but Mopar site says:
Transmission Summary
8-Speed Automatic 850RE Transmission
Max Payload
1185 lb (537.59 kg)
Max Towing
6485 lb (2941.63 kg)

That's quite a difference. If I still consider 6,000 to be max in my mind, then I guess I'll be safe regardless.

How do you check for this information? I’m purchasing a Max Tow tomorrow and if I can see ahead of time, that’d be great. Do you need the VIN?

Oh, so you've seen me.......... hmmm, gotta do a better job hiding the part below the neck, I guess LOL
My JT now has Rubicon springs under the front and max tow springs under the rear. The rear sits about 3/8 to 1/2" lower on the rear now, I'd like to get it back where it belongs, but I like the ride a lot, didn't make it harsh at all.
I still need to put some weight in the back to check how it handles a load but it can't possibly be worse than the original springs. I did have 225 pounds of generator in it but that was mostly over the axle. It dropped it just a small amount, really almost couldn't tell.
I think my problem towing will be the ratio. It's gutless with my empty trailer behind it and that's only 1600 pounds.

I do wonder though why the payload number is really close to what the door sticker says - but the trailer weight so much different. Payload is payload! And tongue weight IS payload since it's sitting in the suspension and held up by the axles.

You can't and it won't be accurate anyway.
You do need the vin and you create an account online with MOPAR and plug in your information, the vin and so on. After you buy it.......
Only a completed vehicle will have the FINAL payload numbers for the specific vehicle you purchase.
Don't go by that stuff or what anyone else posts because the numbers are "base models".
A BASE Overland will have an advertised payload and towing ability. Then you add options, accessories, which add weight to the vehicle - and those numbers DROP from the advertised numbers for that model.
A BASED Rubicon will have specific advertised payload and towing numbers - add options, those go down.
For the MOST PART, each of us has specific numbers for OUR vehicles as they were built.
Some Overland owners could have higher payload and towing than mine, some could have less (not too likely since mine is pretty well loaded so mine is likely at or near the bottom of the payload and towing numbers for Overland JTs)

Not sure how any Sport S with or without max tow have MORE than the advertised base model towing capacity! Yikes - the advertised MAX isn't even 8,000 pounds towing - where the heck? They'd have to take parts off to get that much more.

That should be about the same 8100 max towing and 1550 max payload that mine is.

Neither of these numbers include any people or gear in the vehicles though.

Again, advertised and real numbers are a bit different. Max tow is advertised as 7650 I think. Add about 500 and you get the 8140 his shows. My JTR is advertised as 7000 but mine shows 7445. Your Overland is advertised at 6000 but is actually 6330.

Remember back when car makers would list a muscle as making a low HP number when it was actually kicking a lot more just to keep it in a lower hp bracket. Or that scooter listed as 49cc to avoid helmet and license plate laws.

What does the sticker at the right bottom of the tail gate say? I tried to enlarge it but I can't read it.
