I owned a gasser for about 22k miles. Sold it and bought the diesel.

3.0
tows better. Torque is awesome. Sound great. Gas mileage and DEF to me is a wash
3.6
Doesn’t bottom out. Cheaper to own. Driving characteristics was more nimble.

You decide what makes more sense.

I think all my points have been mentioned, but let me sum up my thought process in one post as to why I ordered a diesel.

Drivability and Ease of use were the top priority along with not getting shit MPG in a truck that will be my daily driver. I also knew that I would want nothing short of 37s (probably going w/ 38s or 39s) on the truck as to me, anything less looks too small on these big berthas. This size tire would require a regear with a gas engine, but not with the diesel. After the fact the diesel still gets roughly double the gas mileage with the lift and tires AND still has more guts to move those wheels and tires. If its not enough for you, the GDE tune will give a decent bump in power and torque while still being EPA compliant.

These reasons are why I went with the diesel. To me it seemed like the best attempt at having my cake and eating it too.

Im crossing my fingers I dont experience the problems others have, and when the warranty comes up, I will either delete it or trade it in depending on my experience. I think the diesel is more of a gamble for sure, but I think the reward outweighs the risk. Hopefully wont eat my words lmao.

Bought my ‘21 eco diesel Willys this summer after taking both gas and diesel out for test drives back to back in same exact route.

Drove gas first, then diesel…. Both Willys to keep it fair. The effortless get up and go along with the purr of that 3.0 was a night and day difference. I couldn’t even keep a straight face when the sales guys asked what I thought.

Absolutely no disrespect to the people driving the gas engine, but the diesel made me laugh out loud and grin like an idiot when driving it. I didn’t even bother handing the sales guy the keys back after the test drive.

5 months and 9,000 miles later ( it’s my daily driver) I’m averaging almost 20 mpg with mostly in town driving and after changing out the MT tires for some Falken Wildpeak AT3’s once snow hit, I look forward to drive into work, and drive home just to listen to that diesel?.

i don’t really tow anything, and honestly didn’t “need” the diesel, it was just that much smoother a drive.

In terms of driving experience, diesel all the way. And as somebody already said, it's not even close. With the GDE tune, you're at over 500 lb/ft of torque at the wheels and the trans is letting you have ALL of the power. Imagine running TWO of the 3.6L engines in series....that's the torque we're talking here. As a bonus you get 30% better real world fuel economy, cast iron steering box, cast iron spindles, and the much stronger and more durable 8HP75 trans.

In terms of cost, gas all the way. The P-star is Chrysler's best engine, and has logged countless millions of combined miles in almost every vehicle they sell for the last 10 years. Service intervals are dirt cheap. And they don't sit in the shop for weeks or months on end for engine oil leaks and fuel injection pump failures like the diesel.

It all depends on what matters to you.
WXman, I didn't know we get a steel gearbox and spindles? That makes sense with the weight but still awesome!

I was having this same debate with myself, for months, before ordering a gas Rubicon.

I’ve owned a few Jeeps with this 3.6 already, and it’s the boring choice but the long term reliability is there. The diesel power is awesome but the reliability just is not, imo. I plan on keeping this truck well past the warranty period and the diesel was too much of a gamble. Also, diesel is about .40 cents a gallon higher in my area. Not a lot, but it all adds up.

Anyway… you can’t go wrong with any Gladiator. If I were short term leasing, I’d go diesel…. But this will be a 7-10 year truck for me, so gas won.

Diesel owner here.

You're going to have to be a little more specific as to what you want out of your Jeep.
Diesel adds power, gas mileage, significantly more front end weight, higher price tag.
Gas is likely a better balanced system for offroading.
Diesels have overheating and front suspension problems.

If you are going to put a lot of hardtop miles and or daily driver, or if the std 3.6 doesn't have enough oomph for you: get the diesel. Going to be offroad a lot or a lot of short drives: (>5 mi) get gas.
IMO, the diesel JT typifies the Overland model; built primarily for luxury(?) on-road, but still off-road capable.

My choice was between a diesel or a Mojave. I love my diesel. With bigger tires the advertised gas mileage plummets, but the power is there and when I start it up every morning, that clatter still puts a smile on my face, which is to say the diesel is more gimmick than practical.

I also find the whole "you don't have to regear with bigger tires if you have a diesel" a bit of a misnomer:

First off, the "have to" is subjective. Both the gas and diesel are adversely affected by bigger tires, the diesel less so. On 37s with a light foot my combined is around 20 which is 15% less than advertised. The week I brought my diesel home, at the pump it jumped 15¢ more than its already 5 to 15¢ over gas so combined with initial cost the mileage benefit is nil.

Bigger tires have the diesel operating at a lower, less efficient rpm range than the system was designed for, AND... adds strain to the rest of the drivetrain components that they weren't designed for.

You can get by with 73s on your 37s diesel the same way you can get by with a 3" lift without changing control arms or track bars; it'll go down the road but some things are out-of-whack and going to cause premature wear. 4.10s with 37s put the rpm range back within 1% of factory on 33s.

The Rubicon diesel bros seem to be dealing with a suspension not matched correctly to the weight of the truck. This causes bottoming out on minor bumps. Mopar lift "fixes" it, probably the longer travel. Rumors are 2022 resolves but is yet to be seen.
just picked my 2022 JTRD up 12/22 and have have no suspension issues.. BUT I did have the mopar lift installed at the dealer prior to pick up.

For the up charge for diesel I’d expect a near flawless and proven build, but it seems that there has been a number of reported issues with the diesel. So, gas seems more proven and reliable To me.

To be fair, IDK that any of it has been reported for MY22 yet. Check out this thread as an example. Or this one. Experiences will vary, but in my research it just didn't sound worth the hassle to me.
