So cheap? It cost me 3500 to do the 390 in my 70 Javelin a few years ago and I did all of the work except the sleeves and crankshaft turning. And you can get the parts, today, at today's prices, and do it for under 10K?
Yeah I think so. Used engines are around 2500. There is a forged rotating assembly for sale on here. I would ve reworking the heads myself as there is no support. Would probably ad an additional monitoring and possible control system for the VVL and VVT. Would talk to Crane about making some proper cams with ensured heat treat. The cam I removed looked barely case hardened. The intake rockers look like they are done correctly, they all still functioned fine and really did not wear all that bad.

There's been a lot of problems with certain performance cams for V8 engines from the past. A lot of company shake-ups, acquisitions, changes, shortages of blanks and so on. Been hard to get decent cams. I came out fine with the cams I've put into my cars (I also try to use top tested oils in them, too, though)
What would your plans be for the heads themselves?

Cool, another thing to be paranoid about.

In all seriousness though, thank you for documenting this and sharing the info

Yeah, I am pretty bummed. This is one of the most expensive new vehicles I have owned and for having a rugged reputation it feels more Ferrari right now.

If I was a casual user, not sure I would of caught my cam voing away until the motor just ate it. Hopefully that would of been before 60K.

Well Tuesday as I was taking the kid to school. I got lifter rattle everytime the truck went past 3000 RPM. I changed the oil yesterday and the varialbe lift solenoid on bank 1 today as that is where I was registering misfires on 1,3, and 5. No dice. Tried giving it an Italian tune up, and my tune just ahut it down cause the ignition was off and the valvetrain was not working.

So the bad: I have the infamous rocker arm failure, but I have a killer power adder on top my engine, which will give them all the excuse they need to deny me warranty.

The good: I can set my redline to 2800 RPM below lockpin and I have enough torque between idle and 2800 to make it all the way into 8th gear at 70 mph. I am getting 18 miles to the gallon.

New cams, lifters, and followers are on order. Be nice if I could get them this weekend. Make it all new and have it ready for dad duties next week.

If not, it is current doing ok in my self induced limp around mode ?
Dave, is this related to your issue - https://www.classaction.org/news/he...ver-alleged-3.6l-pentastar-v6-engine-problems

There have been various issues in the valvetrain, the older models would have rocker arm failure. Putting the wrong lifters in, I believe is a recent development, and is way more widespread than anyone probably knows. I see a ton of people asking about a rattle.

That's what is rather confusing about the years covered and the models listed. If they are going to cover 2020 Wrangler then they must also cover 2020 Gladiator - same design. But from 2014 to 2020 things changed quite a bit. Their chart doesn't make good sense.
Unless they are covering all causes of valve train failures in the 3.6 over the years - sue to cover the failure regardless of cause or part design?

I am gonna borrow a friends bore scope and see if I can see it through the VVL hole, now I know where to look.
Any update on this? Also where would you put the bore scope? I do not have a rattle, smooth idle at 1700 rpm’s, however, doesn’t hurt to have a peek if access isn’t to difficult.

I tried my for a couple hours and damaged my new Borescope. I tried the oil fill and the VVL front solenoid holes. I had no luck. Maybe a smaller Borescope???

I wish they'd come up with a replacement for this POS motor. I'd go diesel, but not an option on the Mojave........and they're proven to be just as problematic.

Absolutely
I traded in my 2020 exact symptoms that you had and I could run the motor hard in the sand or uhh up hills and it would throw a check engine misfire soft code.

traded for a 3.0 ecodiesel and man no supercharger needed.

Yeah, I think the wngine has potential but the aftermarket needs to come out with a valvetrain overhaul.

Just saw this -
I wonder if you could retrofit older rockers (or stake the locking pin in the VVL rockers) and run in high lift all of the time.

Hopefully they figure this crap out by the time they built my engine. ?

Found this video on YouTube. It has a Ripp supercharger but found it interesting what they say at the 16:44 mark on the video. Ripp recommends 5w40 motor oil with their supercharger as the 0w20 does not hold up. I know their was a whole discussion on oil weight the other day. I am running Motul 5w30 with no issues.

The extra air being compressed will generate heat............. and extra pressures on the bearings.
