Hi David - been watching this thread with interest from Australia. I have a 2020 Gladiator Launch, also with a Magnuson blower on it. Done less than 35,000 miles.
Pulled the timing cover off Bank 1 (i.e., passenger side in the US) and my intake cam looks exactly like yours did!! Symptoms were a more constant rocker rattle (especially while towing); and then a code with a Bank 1 Cam 1 fault (P000A).
Below is a picture of a lifter - just to confirm, from your research, does this look like an exhaust lifter (which I removed from under the intake cam)?
In your case, have you worked out whether it was just Bank 1; or also Bank 2 with the wrong lifters?
Of course - getting parts to fix this down here is a nightmare...
Thanks for any help, Jules

As per post above... the centre lobes above all 6 intake valves are toast; as are the rockers

Jules, did not get a picture. So far I have not had to dig into my driver's side. I check my cylinder fuel trims from time to time and I have a WBO2 sensor on hoth sides. I get about two emails a week on this issue, and supercharger is not always the case. I think the modified guys just catch it sooner, because we want the power lol. A casual jeep user may never catch it until they try to get around that butt head on the interstate, and even then the misfire light comes on so often it probably gets written off.

There are a number of issues I have seen.
1. Wrong lifters in the intake cam, causing low oil pressure to the rocker mechanism
2. Failed or marginal VVL solenoids. They activate electronically ( no codes) but the oil flow portion is weak or not working
3. The low lift part of the cam, is a roller cam, so it does not seem to get damaged, but the high lift portion when engaged is essentially a flat tappet cam configuration. I have switched to 5w-30 because of this.

Another of the strange noises people complain about, I am pretty confident, are the mechanical noises the VVL makes as it kicks on or off. Depending on the operating condition, load, and oil health, you can get some concerning noises as the rockers free float against the cam in a lazy activation sequence.

Thanks Dave. Pictures took a while to upload - but should be in the thread now? What do you reckon re that lifter?

Just got the pictures. You had the wrong lifters installed on your intake cam. You can tell by the machined groove in the head. Intake lifters are completely smooth. What sucks, is how do you get Jeep to own up to it?, has nothing to do with being supercharged, it has the wrong parts in it.

The one on the left is what an intake lifters is suppose to look like. The absence of the groove helps keep the rocker seated and the oil from escaping as it is pumped into the lift mechanism of the rocker. The intake rocker does not move as much as the exhaust so no need for the extra lifter clearance.

Thanks Dave - thought as much and really helpful to get your advice.
Very, very frustrating! I know of several other Gladiators in Aus with valve train failure - perhaps a whole batch of engines with this issue... Wonder if anyone has found the wrong lifters in Bank 2; or always just a Bank 1 problem...

Well with the Magnuson in place I am not real excited about digging into the other side lol.

Dave,

Ever have any more thoughts on how to check a motor for the wrong parts when it may not already be busted and require teardown, or is the best way to go just to pull it apart?

I have damaged two pretty costly scopes. I think the best plan is to pop the valve covers off as tedious as it sounds.

That's kinda what I figured. Sorry about the scope damage.

Shouldn't be too hard to pull the valve cover for those of us without a blower on top.

This is all very troubling info, but what can ya do?!?
Literally just dropped $6700 on my 2012 superdutry bc Ford put cheap, chincy injectors retainers in that they replaced in 14 models. When these retainers break, as all of mine did, it blows the injectors out, and the bolts for the retainers break off inside the head mount. Had to replace 4 injectors and 2 new heads bc of a cheap ass $3 part!!

Dave - when you replaced your bank 1 (RHS) cam, did you just order the cam, 6 x rockers and 6 x lifters; or did you need other parts as well?
Seems to be some debate online about whether a cam phaser tool kit is really required?

I may just tear mine down - will take off the blower as well and inspect/ replace bank 2 (LHS) intake cam. Will report back to this group what I find re cam wear on that side and/ or any other issues, given all that metal circulating the oil system...

Now the wait for parts...

I bought the cam tools. It made the job really easy. With the timing gear lock in place you can unbolt the cam phaser and then just wiggle the cam out with the timing and everything still in place. I was able to leave the blower on, and just remove the battery and fuse block tray. Had plenty of room.

I purchased:
1. Intake cam
2. 6 x intake rockers
3. 6 x intake lifters
4. Valve cover gasket
6. Amazon Pentastar cam tools for 2010-2021
7. Camshaft assembly lube
8. Gray RTV for aluminum sealing surfaces, for the timing cover split at the valve cover and for taking off the small oil pan and cleaning it out.
9. VVL front solenoid
10. VVL rear solenoid

The oil pan was mostly clean the oil filter was trashed, I had changed it thre times in the last 2000 miles when I knew what was going on. It has been clean, since the work.
