Absolutely
That is VERY discouraging!! My engine has always had a slight rattle at idle on my JTR. Our JLUR is whisper quiet at idle.

I have had at least 10 people I have helped. I could not understand why all the data looked perfect until they laid into it. No matter what I did, It just always seem ro stumble, until I reposition the cam and remove timing. I am willing to bet a cheese burger, this is it.

I'd be very interested in the build dates on the vehicle............ the year and MDH.
I'd never imply that "anyone who has lifter noise has this issue" as there can be a multitude of causes of things like lifter sounds, rattles, stumbles and so on - but - if there's a range of build dates my experience would suggest there is a pattern.
I have books of service bulletins from the 60s through mid-80s on Jeeps, AMCs, etc. and for everything there's a bulletin about, there's a range of dates or in the case of bigger items, a body sequence code. All issues addressed on every one of those will say something like "between body sequence code 123abc and 567fgh, or engine build dates. The one I remember as "how the XXXX did they miss THAT" is the push rods that were not heat treated. The bulletin said they could be identified because of the lack of the blue ring about 1" from the end of the push rod. No blue, it's not hardened. And they gave build dates to look for.
OK, so I assume back in 1972 someone had to handle those push rods, maybe they were even inserted manually - ya mean no one asked their buddy - hey, don't these look different to you?
Seriously? And what happened - the non-hardened push rods got hammered to death and resulted in a "lifter rattle".
And that makes me wonder- if the lifters of the 3.6 look different between E and I and it was enough your buddy could tell by PICTURES, uh........ was someone sleeping or drunk?

Well I put about 35 miles on it today. With the new cam and hardware, it is so mellow off the line. The tune was good news. It was running a bit on the rich side. My guess is, being in highlift all the time, it was consuming more fuel until the lobes wore down. It felt more aggressive before, but now things are very smooth and predictable.

The really good news, I kept going back on tunes and when I finally hit good fueling, it was at bit before the small pulley split. So standard pulley tunes should be good.

Small pulley guys I have an update. You are running rich around 5700 rpm. I have your names recorded with your current tune ao I will start Monday with sending out updates. I apologize guys, never would of imagined my engine was assembled wrong.

I drained the oil and cleaned the pan surprisingly it was pretty clean, I guess the oil filter setup is good!

Man jeeps are a bit of work to keep them A1?

I love the looks of that truck. I've thought about "Gladiator" decals for my hood, not sure how it would look on the blue.

Glad to hear it’s running well with the new cams and proper lifters!

Any more thoughts on a “simple” way to check if an engine has the right lifters? I’m not opposed to pulling the heads, but I’d rather avoid that if possible.

I was discussing my options with my wife, if this engine continues to have issues. Swaps, trade in etc. I told ger I could build a bullet proof 3.6 for 8-10k she was onboard after telling her the other options lol. Who knows the future could be fun.

So cheap? It cost me 3500 to do the 390 in my 70 Javelin a few years ago and I did all of the work except the sleeves and crankshaft turning. And you can get the parts, today, at today's prices, and do it for under 10K?
