I was aware of Consumer Report's rankings before buying. I also had the luxury of a long term willys loaner (6 months) before I bought my Mojave.

You want a convertible off-roader? It's going to sacrifice some of the manners an on-road fixed top truck is going to have. The comments on the gladiator seem like they're judging a fish on its ability to climb a tree. Expect the Bronco to fail similar comparisons once the shine if off the apple, just like the wrangler does.

This is something I try to explain to people when I'm asked.

They see a big 'ol Jeep that looks cool but then realize how small the interior is and its shortcomings. Look buddy, this is the ultimate offroader that they built a daily driver around. It'll be noisy, cramped at times and all of the R&D was spent on crawling vs your comfort. If you compare it to another vehicle for daily driving vs purpose built offroader, it'll suck. If you compare it to an older version of itself it is awesome.

I think the Maverick is a super neat little truck, my wife is talking about one for her mom. Ford saw a niche everyone else ignored, then really put a lot of thought and engineering into it. Good on them, and I will point out that success from a domestic maker raises ALL boats!

I have not ridden in his truck he says it is a great little truck but I have seen the inside and out and I think they did a good job. As you said it serves a niche. So far I have seen 4 of them just recently over here around my area

I love my Gladiator for what it is. I knew I wouldn't get the plushes ride or quietest cabin but I still smile daily when I drive it. Today, it's top and doors off! Try that with a Ranger!
I'm waiting for the Rivian shakedown. It will be my next truck in 2024 if it is still going strong.

Learned in in Shop class in high school, when you think about it, quite accurate.

I've used the basic premise to teach kids four stroke (DID I JUST SAY STROKE!!!) theory, using different visual aids.

Easy to remember.

I was operating my own repair shop by the time I was 16 so got to skip the basic intro classes, went right into the 3rd level senior class (and won a bet with the teacher - he had to make me a steel table for testing small engines and I still have that table to this day).
Anyway, I was authorized for Jacobsen, Tecumseh/Peerless/Power Products, and Briggs and Stratton back in the early 70s, about 1973.
One decent explanation of the 4 strokes of a 4 stroke/cycle engine is in the basic B&S repair manual dating back decades. It's got good graphics and explanation of each stroke. And the Power Products books do well for the 2 stroke-cycle engines.

I have since studied in detail the combustion processes, impacts of various fuels, the burning process and especially the causes and effects of pre-ignition and detonation, and pre-ignition caused by detonation. It's crazy complex because the same octane fuels, even the exact same fuels, can behave differently in different engines due to the effects of heat and compression breaking down the chemical components - making the fuel more prone to detonation, or less prone, depending on conditions.

Among the things I have are articles written by a GM engineer, the guy who was involved with the development of the Cadillac Northstar engine and who has some patents with his name attached for engine parts.

The burn is not perfectly smooth as far as the flame front. There are fingers of burning mixture reaching out into the unburned mix - Rayleigh-Taylor instability (more often associated with layer of fluid where the lighter fluid is supporting the heavier fluid against gravity) - the less dense fingers of the flame front reach into the denser unburned mixture.
The fingers of burning mix cause the surface area of the flame front to be many times larger than if it was a smooth ball of flame spreading out into the denser unburned mixture.
So while the progression of the flame front is orderly, it's not smooth like a baby's butt.

Detonation is characterized by an instantaneous, explosive ignition of at least one pocket of fuel/air mixture outside of the flame front. A local shockwave is created around each pocket and the cylinder pressure may rise sharply beyond its design limits.

I know how it goes on the internet - people can't believe anyone actually has history or formal education in something, or has done maybe more than someone else, so people will argue even if Otto himself stepped into the conversation.
No one can possibly know more than the guy trained by reading fakebook posts or swapping engines under the oak tree in the yard, but it's been my life for 50 years and what my degree is in.

(if you asked Sheldon Cooper, he'd explain that the intake stroke below is incorrect, nothing is drawn in, it's pushed in by higher pressure. If the Klingons breech the hull of the Enterprise, the guy in the red shirt isn't sucked into space, he's blown into space)

If I missed someone already posting this I apologize. The issue with the engines was a batch of bad valves. How much damage is done seems to be based on where the valve (or valves) broke.
Any manufacturer can have this happen, it sucks for Ford that it is another issue with the Bronco. I am not a huge Ford fan except for certain models over the years, but I hate to see any major car maker have these issues on one of there premier vehicles.

Yes, and that news is actually at least a few weeks old as I recall. So, it surprises me that it pops up a news, especially since the articles I saw, and I'd be YOU saw already as well, have already said the cause was known........ and it's limited, resolved.

It’s actually a little max tow envy, gas mileage envy and a lot of 37 envy. And a bit of jealousy because you will own both a Gladiator and a Bronco.

They don't fit my personal taste in vehicles, and on that I would choose any of a number of other options for my use - but I am curious as to what the attraction is.
They are on the road around here - and by that I have two meanings. They are selling here, but being used totally as grocery getters like pretty much any other "SUV" and won't be off-road.
So, why not Land Rover, or a model made by GM, or whatever?
