I'm pretty sure I would have gotten a diesel if that had mated it to a manual transmission. That said, it all depends on what your specific needs are.

One consideration is that you can't get full-time 4WD with the diesel, if that matters to you. It did to me.

I was reallly tempted by the diesel, but wasn't convinced it wasn't a ticking time bomb. The gas Pentastar is a known beast with a reliable track record. The irony here is that I used to want a diesel truck for the reliability. I just couldn't come to the conclusion that the 3.0 would offer that. Too many cooks (emissions) in the kitchen for me, and I want the option to keep my JT for several years without any hassle.

In terms of driving experience, diesel all the way. And as somebody already said, it's not even close. With the GDE tune, you're at over 500 lb/ft of torque at the wheels and the trans is letting you have ALL of the power. Imagine running TWO of the 3.6L engines in series....that's the torque we're talking here. As a bonus you get 30% better real world fuel economy, cast iron steering box, cast iron spindles, and the much stronger and more durable 8HP75 trans.

In terms of cost, gas all the way. The P-star is Chrysler's best engine, and has logged countless millions of combined miles in almost every vehicle they sell for the last 10 years. Service intervals are dirt cheap. And they don't sit in the shop for weeks or months on end for engine oil leaks and fuel injection pump failures like the diesel.

It all depends on what matters to you.

I have a 2022 Diesel Rubi on order. I have owned many Jeeps and I am looking forward to this one the most.

Wanted a M/T, so only gas option.
However, I also light to run much lighter on my rig. So I skipped Rubicon and went with Sport S, and will upgrade parts as needed. I never needed the lockers before, nor upgraded axles. With the M/T, you miss out on the bigger towing too - so it seemed doubly unnecessary.

still have 4wd and will upgrade tires/suspension when needed.

It’s highly individual. I have had many diesel rigs from VW to CTD. I have really liked them all. I even swapped a 12 valve into a 88 suburban and daily drove that for a few years.
i really like diesel. The torque is great.
the money thing doesn’t matter as much to me as it does to some. I generally don’t look at a rig as a resale option as I hang onto things. There’s a TJ I own that I still drive that I bought mid 1996.
My first diesel Jeep is on order, I’m excited to meet it.

I have the gas engine and I like it. If I were to be in your position ordering one and have the extra $4,000 then I would probably go diesel too despite the issues that some people have had with it.

That being said, the gas engine is fine. I’ve got 63 pound 33” tires on my truck running stock 4.10 gears and it gets up and goes as you would expect any 4500-5000lbs truck to do. The Diesel engine is not gonna make it much faster but it will be more tolerable up hills and/or pulling loads.

If you want all that extra torque, then get the diesel and don’t look back. That’s just my two cents.

unless you absolutely have to have the manual (it's not my favorite manual by any stretch either) than the diesel is a much nicer engine to drive

Honestly the exhaust note alone is worth the upgrade vs the pstar.

I've driven both. Totally unimpressed by the gasser. It down shifts going on overpasses down to 6th. My diesel barely downshifts going from 4100' to over 7k' at 75 mph. If I leave it in M mode I can lug the diesel in 8th with more power to just roll on the throttle. Wouldn't trade it at all.

When I traded in my JKUR for my JTRS it fixed my two biggest compliants about my JK, how you would have to wring it out to get it to move and how it would hardly hold on to 5th gear. Having the torque of the diesel makes a world of difference, it makes the Jeep feel effortless.

That being said there are compromises, my truck being a fully loaded rubicon only has 909 lbs of payload, so keep that in mind.
