Is it possible he could not find low gear, or thought he had it in low but was really a gear too high and he had to work the clutch to get it to move? Who said he was good with a stick?
My guess is he left the parking brake on and tried to move it. Or something similarly stupid. It's hard to believe that one could ride a clutch to death in the short trip from a hotel garage to the front door, but I guess anything is possible.

Theres a recall on the clutch/pressure plate and some TSB's you should push on the dealer that it should be covered.
As far as I can tell the clutch recall just reprograms the engine to reduce torque when the clutch gets hot enough to start a fire (!!!). Shouldn't be an excuse for a fried clutch. I guess the valet is just lucky the truck didn't burst into flames under their abuse!

You really think valets, car-parkers at a hotel, or for that matter, anywhere, are professional drivers? Really? All you need is the right license and a good resume, and these days, those are even often padded. Or no resume at all - go online, apply, make it sound good, and you have a job. With almost all businesses desperate for bodies, they are scraping the bottom of the barrel. There's few out there to choose from. Those who are good have any job they wish - that leaves the rest...... and you believe a professional driver does the car parking?
Clearly I've been spoiled by the parking guys at the NYC garage where my other car lives. They whip vehicles around frontward, backward, whatever, into tiny spots, around obstacles, into and out of elevators, etc. etc. Better and much, much faster than I could do, and I provide myself on car control and knowing where the corners are. But the Seaport Hotel Boston valets appear not to be so skilled. Unfortunately.

Casino Valet refused to park mine since the doors were off (had trail doors on). Dumb.

My old roommate in college was a valet for several high end hotels and restaurants for years. He smoked a lot of ganja before, during, and after his shifts. I would get texts showing the Ferraris, Lambos, Aston Martins, etc he would drive that day. Sometimes he would include videos of him or one of the other valets drifting around corners and doing burn outs in those same cars. He also would commonly come home with things he "found" in people's cars. (He literally brought home a violin one time) I honestly never valet for this very reason.

We had a valet driver at a major Vegas Hotel climb into our brand new Volvo and run it over two 8 inch curbs while we watched. Broke the wheel at the bead on the drivers side front and scraped the left rear. We complained and he denied it. I pushed it hard and after a year got 4 (count them) brand new matching Volvo OEM MAG wheels and a 3 day comp at the hotel. If you don't complain and then back it up, they will crap in your salad plate all day long. It seems [young ?] people today have absolutely NO respect for anything....
Yeah those Casinos are really good at taking your money, but stingy at ever giving it back.

In relation to young people having no respect, it's usually something that sadly doesn't get passed down. 😉

Did you give him a tip $$$?
I did tip him--quite well, IIRC--when he gave me the car back. But then he disappeared quickly enough that there was no one to discuss the smell with. And I had no time to wait around. Dumb. :(

Years ago I had a Saab 900 Turbo. One of the old school ones. With the key in the floor.

As a theft deterrent the manual transmission car locked in Reverse. You had to put it in Reverse to get the key out. Then the sifter was locked there.

I once handed the car off to Valet parking at a Chart House and when I got out of dinner the car was parked in front with the Ferraris and S Class Benzes. It turns out they couldn't figure how to get the key out. So they had to park it in front where they could see it.

I was a valet at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver when I was in my early 20s. I could tell a lot of stories that would horrify owners. Bottom line - I don't often give my vehicles to valets anymore.
Ferris Bueller's Day off cured me of ever thinking of giving a car to a valet! ;)
