With gas prices as they are in California, and a Costco right around the corner, that’s my gas. I do notice better mileage and power when I fill up in Nevada.
I don't miss the California gas, trash fuel any way it's dispensed.

I used to log all my fill ups in a spreadsheet with date, price, fuel retailer, and any special notes (this tank I was towing a lot, or this tank I had more city driving, etc.). I did this for years.

What I noticed is that there WAS a difference in MPG between retailers. In my area, Kroger gasoline provided the best results. Some of the worst results came from Top Tier fuel retailers.

Now, most insiders will remind you that ALL gasoline comes from just a couple of refineries. But, the difference is that each retailer uses their own additive package. So it makes sense that there would be a small difference in efficiency between them.

With diesel fuel it doesn't seem to matter. I get the same MPG hand calculated no matter what.
My Dad used to be in sales for a major oil company and he said Kroger tends to bid on the best quality gas as opposed to the Maverick that is common out in the western states that only bids on the lowest quality gas.

I've already done some of this and conveyed partial results to another member. My results followed the science and FACTUAL octane info I've posted before. Yes to differences.......even in intake and exhaust sound. 1 tank is all but meaningless. I made note of trends, not just based on 1 tank. Biggest differences were under load.

Here in Western PA I know that the same pipeline flows into 3 main holding facilities. No matter what the name is on the side of the truck, they haul gas out of those locations.

Is it possible that they add something on site at the gas station? I wouldn't think so but I could be wrong.

I get gas where I can... I am pretty steady at 19.5 - 20 mpg depending on where I'm driving.
Having worked for an oil company as a service tech years back, I can tell you that anything added to the gas was at the tank farm the trucks fill at. The same gas came in, and they'd mix additives for whatever company they were supplying accordingly then load the trucks.
I had multiple discussions in that respect with drivers as well as higher up's in the company at the time.

That's from the different state regulations. Nevada is not as strict on the refinement on gas as California is. I have a class A motorhome and we go South every year. I always get better gas mileage coming home than I do going South. That's because the gas in the South is less refined as the gas in Maryland where I live.

Premium fuel burns hotter, can't imagine it would be best to run 91 long term?
No
It doesn't. It can handle heat better as it resists self-ignition. It's the same energy content. If comparing pure gas premium to ethanol regular, yeah. You simply waste money on premium in many cases....it causes no harm.

You're right, I should have clarified the case to be true if the engine was tuned for it.

I drink Seafoam straight from the can. It cures all my ailments.
(Disclaimer- Don’t actually do this! It may kill you. It also is not likely to cure an engine oil consumption problem)
You make fun, but this is my observation. Watched the flush before burning 1 qt every 2k, and never burned oil after. Sometimes, observation may lead clues to undiscovered results. Be Well.

whenever I go rock crawling my mileage tanks irrespective of fuel source. point being too many things influence MPG to really test this out

It could work if the rings are "stuck" due to varnish, carbon, etc.
Seems rather rare these days - I've not seen one impacted by stuck rings in ages, but we used Wynn's products that did the trick back then.
That's the only way "products" can possibly work - if it's due to varnishes, oil changed not often enough or bad oil, that sort of thing that makes rings stick.

Not really. I've already done some tests........ it takes time, you have to chart trends and make OTHER observations, but it's not impossible over time. One or two tanks won't cut it.
What's rock crawling have to do with it, I wonder?
We're talking highway for the most part. VERY easily repeatable.
We actually did such studies in high school and college.
