Yes, the scrambler was more like a midsized truck. The original gladiator was a full sized beast.

We are in a weird corner here, the Scrambler name is tied to the CJ line and would be a natural hand me down since the CJ8 was to the CJ7 what the CJ6 was the to the CJ5. A similar line of thinking would hold for the JK/JL & JKU/JLU.

CJ6

The problem comes when Jeep scales the mountain and declares to God and creation that the JT is not a wrangler with a bed tossed on, nor is it a continuous tub like the CJ6/8 whose closest living relative is the J8 mil-spec offering. Also complicating the matter is the CJ10 which was both an Australian and DoD offering and was in essence a CJ cab and chassis fitted with J10/20 running gear.

So you see that the blood line gets a little iffy. If you follow the CJ10 line you track back to the J10/20/30 & J1000/2000/3000 & Gladiator/Gladiator with Safari Grill/Honcho/Golden Eagle/Laredo/M715 and are siblings with the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer as well as the full size Cherokee/Cherokee Chief. But, all of the FSJ family doesn't look like or share design cues with the CJ family. If you follow the CJ8 line you have the CJ8/CJ6/Jeepster group which are all unit tubs with no separate bed and are not truck derived.

The only real clear ancestor is the Willys pickup but that's so far back that the youth today would have no idea what you are talking about considering Willys folded in 1963, it would be like Audi making hay about Auto Union.

That said, I think we would all love to see the Scrambler name come back and most of us agree that it would be best on a 2 door body with throwback graphics and would be best paired with a more broadly thought out Jeep Goes Retro marketing push, dredging up the old stripe and badge packages of old to make the brand stand apart from Dodge/Ram SRT and give the down market models some razzle dazzle. Imagine a Sport S with the Laredo tuxeudo black paint and silver/gray stripes and a black with silver/gray striped interior.

I kind of wish they'd given it a new name... That said, it's a little closer in spirit to the comanche than either the scrambler or gladiator. 4 door mid sized off road SUV spawns a separated bed pickup...

PLYWOOD.

So here's my thing, if JT 2020 makes it long enough to have a special edition two door (I know, I know), they would do well to call the package a 'scrambler' ...
