Adjusted for inflation alone that $5k in 1976 is 30k now. A base f250 4x4 starts at $42k and is 10x the truck that a loaded '76 could hope to be from power to towing capacity to brakes to comfort. Sure you might not care about safety, but ABS and a bunch of airbags add significant cost. Nobody wants to admit it, but this is the pinnacle of vehicle value right now once you adjust for inflation and all the things that are light years better. Even the v6 in a nearly 6k pound JT is as quick as a 5.0 fox body from the 90s. Even if you went for the top of the line 390 V8 in that 1976, it was 12.0s 0-60, slow as molasses. Just 85 more hp in a truck that weighs near the same and it's 5s faster to 60.
I tend to look at the bright side of things. When the 4G towers die, your trucks telematics module won't be able to send a constant stream of data back to the mothership anymore.
Very true, all of it. But that's all OUR, the consumers, fault. We all want our paychecks to be very high, constantly demand raises, but we want to pay very low for things. We can't have it both ways. If we had a 100% Made in the USA vehicle, made only by Americans, well, to cover their high paychecks alone would make the vehicle cost skyrocket. So parts get sectioned out to those areas that do not have medical, dental, vision, sick days, 401k's, pensions, many weeks of paid vacation, routine steady pay increases, continued pay if you're off injured, continuing training classes, etc.. It goes to some poor soul wearing flip-flops that knows nothing of OSHA or an 8 hour shift or overtime. And he does if for a daily pay that is less than half of our hourly wage.
Millionaires don't make a million dollars a year, and the vast majority are just working class people in these ultra expensive housing markets. You save and struggle to buy a $400-500k house and by the time is paid off it's worth $1.2 million. Rents are so high in these areas that you're still saving money paying a $4k mortgage. A high percentage of teachers are now millionaires despite everyone crying about their low wages. I think most of the $80-100k vehicle purchases are just people over buying on 8+ year car loans.
