Diesel owners; do you regret you engine choice?

The gas engine actually has more power @285 vs 260hp from the diesel. You could experience this in an exaggerated way by taking each up a steep mountain road. The gas engine will beat the diesel up the mountain (admittedly with more exertion though). Or you could just race them on flat ground to top speed.

Horsepower = How quickly work can be done (Torque x RPMs / 5252).

Torque = the overall work that can potentially be done.

Before I get BERATED for being a complete smartass, the diesel will excel for what this vehicle is made for on-road (MPGs) and off the road (torque down low). No one in their right mind would choose the gas over diesel option if a) money wasn’t an issue and b) reliability was equal to the Pentastar.

The other aspect often over looked is at altitude and when loaded down. As youtuber the story till now. His gas truck gets left up grades by the two diesels he wheels with.

Have over 5k JTRD jus amazing!!! Go ahead an listen to those who know it all an don’t own one if you want. Didn’t buy to save money jus to enjoy. It’s great over 20 mpg all the time and I put the torque to the wheels every chance I get. 1/4 mile let me pick the corse an I get the gas every time.

I like Mopar's sun bonnet. But it's not compatible with Mopar's grab handles--at least i couldn't figure out how to put them on.

No regrets for me. The mini van motor was a deal killer for me. Once the diesel was available I was all in. Test drive them both and you’ll see even day to day it’s a lot more fun to drive. Then loaded up with gear it’s night and day.

I bought a Mojave in December. I went back to the dealer March 2nd and ordered a Rubicon diesel. Painful, but I personally don't care for the pentastar.

With diesel more expensive at the pump, plus the initial $4000 more upfront. The fuel economy is a wash at best.

Diesel has only been running .30 cents more max around here. Some days I have seen it the same as gas. I did some calculating on "break even" vs the gas GMC Canyon I came from. If diesel stays less than roughly .40-.45 cents with gas, I am gaining ground. Although I'm not really looking for "payback" anytime soon.

Some of you are worried about keeping the EcoDiesel outside of its warranty. Keep in mind that replacement engines appear to be fairly cheap. I can get a brand new engine with new CP4 pump, new injectors, and new turbo for $7,495 with a warranty (3 year/100,000 mile) for my 2015! The new 3rd gen engines aren't available yet, but I bet they won't be much higher. The 2nd gen engine was $6,950 before the pandemic, so I'm not sure if the price will drop back down or not. The last I checked, the price included free shipping and no core exchange!

Bought mine in December, and love it! More torque, better gas mileage, and the sound just brings a smile to my face. Just took it to a trip to Southern Utah from Phoenix going through the mountains in Flagstaff AZ and got 24 mpg. Got 27 mpg back home. For me, it's just better overall. Its my first diesel and would definitely recommend it.

I would like to know how many diesel owners are purchasing the extended/lifetime warranties though?!?!?

The Powertrain comes with a 5yr 100k warranty on eco

I'm a new JTRD owner with about 1k miles on it, and I must say that this engine is perfect for a Jeep of this size. You can't wipe the smile from my face every time I drive it!

I've done my fair share of V8 swaps into CJ's over the years in an attempt to remedy the performance losses caused by large tires, heavy drivetrain, mucho camping gear, etc. However, these swaps always came at the cost of time, terrible fuel economy, questionable reliability and marginal performance gains. Here, we have an engine that continues to perform with with a full load, 37's, stock gears and still has the best fuel economy of any Jeep I've ever owned or driven.... and it has the potential of being a million mile engine.

Simply put, if you just what to count nickels and the most off-roading you do is curb jumping at the mall or you plan to hit the occasional fire road, the gasser is hard to beat. However, if you plan to build, wheel it, and keep it forever, like me , you might find the diesel to be a better long term investment.

Also, that smile is worth something!
