Anyone using an Eaton/Detroit TrueTrac instead of a locker in front?

I have the factory limited slip in the rear and considering the TrueTrax instead of locker in the front.

Any comments on this setup?

I wouldn’t hesitate if I wasn’t in a rubicon. My XJ has a Detroit up front with a factory LSD in the back and it is damn near unstoppable.

This is 100% the route I’ll be taking when the time comes. I’m actually just going to end up doing truetrak front and rear when the rear lsd wears out. After watching people struggle in Moab and being able to climb up no problem with LSD I’m a firm believer in it now.

Thanks. Is the factory LSD prone to wear out?

From what I understand, The factory LSD uses clutches that wear out whereas the others use more of a mechanical gear type setup that never wears out.

Curious how the truetrac in the front would do when needing 4wd in northern ontario winters

I thought about using a TrueTrack in the front and installing the factory limited slip in the rear. But I have had a few Jeep rear axles apart and this is what I have found multiple times. Because of this, I will use TrueTrack differentials when I get around to going into the axles.

It does cause different driving dynamics. It's NOT an auto-locker, for some reason a lot of people think it is. But I had true tracks front and rear of my OBS F350 and paired with wrangler duratrac tires it did excellent in the winter.

I pinged my head around on this for six months.

I ended up putting a locker in the front.

My plan is when the LSD wears out to put a true track in the rear.

A true track will do 90% of what a locker will. But when you need that 10%…..

So the question is do you need that 10%?

For the things I want to do the answer was yes, but 90% of the time I don’t need the front locker.

I have Eaton Trutrac if front and rear and they have been great. I have a 2020 max tow. Haven't done a whole lot of wheeling yet but they have been good on road and snow.

The BLD in modern JT/JLs will do 90% of what a limited slip will do. I couldn't bring myself to spend the same money to gain 10% and leave the other 10% on the table. It's not like our diffs are truly open thanks to the modern ABS/BLD.

Not in 4L it won't. Took the JTW out the other night with a couple of the boys, went to a light off-road trail and normally I can do it in 2H most of the way. With 2 feet of snow we started in 4L, and learning the hard way that someone came through and rutted up the trail from a previous storm, I got stuck in 4L when the ice broke through. Not totally stuck, but needed a little snatch strap help to overcome the last 2 feet I couldn't make to get out.
- This was when I needed a front LSD. A locker wasn't necessary as I could see one wheel just spin up front while the other wouldn't. Even at a lock rate of 2.5:1 like the Torsen (Eaton TrueTrac) would have gotten me out by myself. Surprisingly the factory Traclok (anti-spin LSD, clutched) in the rear didn't open with 42k on it.

I had the stock Firestone MTs on with 15k miles at 35psi (just cold weather, on road they warm up to 37psi), probably would have helped if I aired down, but I needed ground clearance.

I plan on swapping to an Eaton TrueTrac in front, I thought about a locker but the issues with turning are the biggest stopper for me, and I don't feel like breaking an axle which with a locker is easier to do. My only thoughts are how it will affect turning at speed or at full lock on pavement, but I'm not close to doing this mod yet (need 34s, 4.88s, and suspension at the same time).

Not true. They operate on a ratio between the 2 tires. The one in the air will spin appx 2.5 times while the one on the ground spins once. They never wear out, don't require special additive.

Had several vehicles from them. Great road manners, basically seamless. Great in snow and ice if you drive to maintain traction. If you punch it, it will spin both tires.

Theres a reason many of the OEM's run them. From sports cars to trucks, easy added traction without air, wires, or any other external complexity.

Been all over Colorado, Moab with them front and rear in an XJ, could tell they were working. Towed in snow and ice in my 14' Ram 2500 all over the country, knew it was working for me. It was OEM. 450HP 70 Nova with a stick, put the power down, never gave a problem. It was built to be abused.
