I've never heard of an EcoDiesel owner being denied warranty due to a tune, but it is possible. Generally speaking, the tune isn't going to cause premature failure, so it hasn't been an issue. In most cases, the dealer has no clue you have a tune. Most of us switch back to the OE tune for warranty work.
It is pretty common in the 3/4 and 1 ton Ram GM and Ford diesel to have warranty denials on tuned trucks, they know what to look for. Not sure the half ton trucks are under the same scrutiny yet.

With the GDE tune, it would be very hard to know if you have a tune, especially if you switch back to the stock ECM.

Has anyone successfully got a second ECM for a JT diesel and swapped them back and forth?

I'm working on that project right now. Because of widespread staffing shortages at all shops in our region, it's taking time. But I'm hoping to have a solid answer on whether this is possible or not by the end of next week at the latest.

Great Job! About what speed do you travel to achieve the 23mpg? I am able to get 30mpg going 70mph hwy, but doing 80-85 takes a huge hit to about 26mpg.
The speed was 70 mph mostly. Sometimes slightly faster but only to pass other cars. The tune gave me 3 mpg better when I was only doing 20mpg with the lift and tires. So about a 15 % improvement. But the real reason I did the tune was to have the engine run cleaner and last longer. But the increased torque and horsepower are nice to have as well.

The engine and transmission tune are a package for 1100. I suggest if you get the tune to always do the transmission as well.
Mat mentioned that it is a package because with the EPA they would have to apply separately for approval so by having a combined package only needed one approval as I understand it.

They are telling me November 20th is the tentative date for this thing to officially go on sale. Right now they are only doing the soft launch of course for anybody who's willing to drive to Michigan. I nearly took the drive, but decided to wait until I have a stock PCM as a backup first. My buddy says he can program my backup PCM this week. We'll see....

Well I'm at my buddy's shop today. They are going to attempt to program a spare PCM for me. We'll see how this goes...

Well apparently they have to get Chrysler to ok the security bypass. It's a complicated process on these modern PCMs. Will be a while before we'll know anything.

Wouldnt that be tied to your vin and thus a black mark?

Inquired about sending my PCM in. He said it first must be updated to the latest firmware and be running the latest software FCA has for the truck. My build was mid June of this year and according to the picture of the PCM sticker I sent, it is running the latest. If it wasn't, he said I'd need to have Jeep get me updated.

At this moment, I'm fortunate that I'm running the latest but I don't want my PCM shrink-wrapped at the latest "state" forever. Based on the above, unlike other bench tuning scenarios where the PCM/ECU is directly tuned by a tuner via EcuTek/UPRev/etc. and updates could still happen over OBDII via the dealer, it sounds like this is a forever thing unless I go through the trouble of mailing it back to GDE to have it removed, then back in my truck to pick up sensible updates over the coming years from Jeep.

I assumed I could go GDE then just get a "DO NOT FLASH" cap for my OBDII port but it sounds like even non-firmware based updates and patches won't be possible.

Any insight on this?

So I'm having a hard time following this. Are you saying that after a conversation with GDE it has been determined that once your PCM is flashed with the GDE tune it then cannot be updated by dealerships ever again? So, for example, if a new update is released by the factory to correct an issue of some type in the future, the dealer cannot flash that new update to you?

That’s precisely what I’m trying to iron out. I would think no, but that doesn’t explain why he specifically said my PCM must have the latest available updates. It hasn’t mattered in the past on any platform I’ve worked with, however it may be that Jeep released something relevant to final testing/de-bugging that he’s now depending on. That’s best case though, I’ll email him
Now to find out for sure, figured I’d ask here first in case someone knew definitively.

The GDE can be overwritten by a dealer. GDE wants it updated before tuning, so there is no chance the dealer would inadvertently wipe out the new tune during something benign as an oil change. If a recall comes out, then best to get the new software and update with GDE afterwards for $50.
