You are probably not sticking it in far enough.

The pump nozzle shut off uses a small hole at the end of the nozzle to suck in air and the venturi effect keeps a small diaphragm inflated. When the fuel reaches the level of the small hole, it reduces the venturi effect, deflating the diaphragm and cutting off the fuel flow.

If the fuel is overflowing, then the diaphragm is not deflating fast enough if at all. So make sure the pump nozzle is inserted as far as possible and not cocked to one side.

One reason when I see or hear it getting near the end that I don't let it shut off by itself is the bounce fluids can have. Stop flow suddenly and it can come back at you. Even worse if the nozzle isn't fully inserted. But I tend to stop it and run it more slowly and manually as it gets near the top.
Fluid can "bounce back" once the pressure that was keeping it moving is released.
I've seen it with my rear-fill AMCs. Let it shut off fast and you get half a cup of gas back at you. .

I have been using the paper towels at the gas station and shove them around the nozzle so I don't get gas all over the side....towels catch the splash back and it's every time I fill up.
Yep Good tip. Will be doing that as a precaution from here on out until I can figure out what's up or what needs to be fixed.

My Gladiator started doing this after 25,000 miles and it’s at different gas stations and most of the time.

Mine burps out gas too, which is pretty disappointing. I fill it on the slowest "click" of the handle and never top it off, but it does it regardless.

I had this issue with my Gladiator from the start it is a known issue. When mine was at the dealership they actually sent out an engineer from FCA. I believe they replaced the neck leading to the tank. I don't know if this is correct but it was explained to me a part (valve?) in the hose and/or tank went bad or is bad and they started with the easiest fix first. If that didn't work they were going to replace the whole tank.

Well I'm here because I'm having the same overfilling issue. It's happened at least 3 times now. On my last 3 fill ups from a half tank. Started now in January or February I'd say. For reference i was stretching the hose too the far to the opposite side. So the gas door wasn't facing the pump. I attributed the first 2 spills to myself. But today i did everything correct facing the pump . The hose deep into the jeeps channel, and it still squirted out. Needless to say I'll keep an eye on it. I'll start trying to slow down my pump speed. But this is unacceptable. I hate that i have to make concessions because I have a jeep. Next oil change I'll let the dealer know. Hopefully it can be serviced. I mean i just hit 10k miles one year and 3 months into the ownership of my 2021 Jeep... My wife's 5 year old (new when bought) Honda pilot has had no issues to date

Same issue from day 1, no matter which gas station it is, if I leave the pump on (either click), auto shut off results in overflow. It’s been to the dealer, they checked the tank, lines, etc and then replaced the evap canister. It still does it unless I manually fill it slowly. Even then it’s still a crap shoot.

After dozens of fills this happened to me for the first time on my 21' yesterday. Go the same station consistently. Happened prior to the full 'click' so it's not like I topped it off with a few extra squirts. Glad to see it's an issue and not due to my incompetence....

Even though an old post I cannot argue with ShadowsPapa...
You should be attentive when fueling. Leave your damn phone in the truck.
If you pay attention you can hear when the fuel is reaching the top.
It’s not rocket science to put gas in a truck. ?

I've never had a problem with mine in all of these miles and fills except one station - and that nozzle was just plain flaky.
When experiencing splash-back, check the end of the nozzle. Is it worn? Are the ends rounded in from use, maybe one got dropped and dinged the end? If the very end is damaged, dented, rolled in from use or bring dropped - it's a problem nozzle. Also try to keep the nozzle centered in the truck's fill tube, in far enough, not shoved in so that the end is shooting gas at the sides of the filler neck inside.

I have been having issues with the same thing, regardless of how fast or slow I run the flow, it will spit fuel back. I have tried to lean over and listen for the point of the fill coming up, but it is like a instant belch and gas is all over the fender. And it is at different gas stations not just one nozzle. Damn gas pumps with a TV screaming in my ear makes it harder to hear. If I wanted to watch tv at the gas pump, I would bring my recliner. But it is not just me, because I have tried different methods.. Slow, fast, nozzle location in neck but it usually makes a mess on the fender.

2nd button down on the right side of the screen mutes them.
