The most I have towed with mine is around 5,500 lb, pulling a car hauler (with electric brakes) with a project Jeep or a tractor on it. That was with stock 31 inch tires. The power was good. I wasn't towing through the mountains or anything like that, so I can't comment on that piece. I did not have cooling issues. I only wished I had a weight distributing hitch and sway control, that was the only negative for me, those would have made it much easier to control.

Short answer. Tapped into the factory ports, bottom of oil filter housing. From there to an Amsoil bypass filter/housing to Derale cooler w/fan. Returned to oil pan.
Search my post in Diesel cooling for Detailed info. Ask questions on that thread.
Thanks,, will go to that thread for more information..

why not try to rent something for the weekend that is close to what you want and see how it does before you put down a big pile of money.

Yea my suggestion would be the biggest enclosed UHAUL trailer with double axles. Then find heavy objects to add weight. Then see how it does as you drive to the nearest truck stop that has a Cat Scale.

This topic comes at a great time for me, been camping solo in a little DIY overland trailer with a RTT and kitchen (1000lbs) in my JKUR until I bought this JTRD that already had a RTT on the topper, my wife went with me last weekend and had a blast (was a girls scout leader for 12 years and only camped with a bunch of kids and was over it) and wants to go again tomorrow with the overland trailer but we both know a small camper with a head is in our future. I am looking at mostly 3400ish DW campers and sweating it knowing our most likely spots are 6000 ft of elevation gain in 45 minutes.

I'm surprised that you feel the 3.73s are a little too deep for the factory 33" tires, but I'm glad to hear it for towing. Jeep probably thought that was the best gear offering that balanced the steep divide between moderate towing and unloaded fuel economy. Unlike Ram, Jeep didn't give us a choice. My 2020 Ram EcoDiesel has the optional 3.92 gears with factory 32" tires. It's a towing machine but doesn't get the great fuel economy like the standard 3.22 gears, but that's okay since I wanted to prioritize towing over fuel economy.
when you say it gets less mpg are we talking it goes from 25mpg to 15 or 25 to 22?

With 3.92, we average between 27 - 29 mpg (depending in speed and wind conditions) when running empty. The folks with 3.22 gears are getting closer to 29-32 mpg when running empty.

I routinely tow around 4800lbs depending on gear and the truck does good on 37s with 4.56s. I don’t have to battle any major grades though.

what are you getting for MPGs on that and how far is the trip/driving style?

i am looking at getting one for some cross country trips and may take my 2 seat RZR along in an aluminum enclosed trailer. i've been using my f450 for years now so weight for me has never been a consern lol

I just did this exact thing on the way home today.
I put it into manual and hit 7th. Cruised along nicely, when an incline and a little extra go pedal had it shift all the way down to 5th. My wife asked if I meant to have it in manual still. I looked at the dash and that's when I noticed it was in 5th. Probably been there for 1/2 mile longer than it needed to be.
I hate the way manual mode works.
I've owned manual transmission vehicles exclusively for 34 years, so I was irritated that the only way I could get the diesel Jeep I wanted was to order it with the automatic. At least it's one of the world's best automatic transmissions.

I'm grateful for the manual mode, but I do find it irritating that it's not a true manual mode and it'll decide to kick down to 5th on a grade instead of a less frenetic gear. At any rate, I'm generally happy with its algorithm in auto mode, and being able to (mostly) control it in manual mode takes some of the sting out of not having a third Man Pedal to step on.

For me shifting got old fast. At one point I had a 1.5 mile commute. The Honda was driving at the time was a 5spd. It was over 30 pressings of the clutch pedal just to get to work.
Been in autos ever since. Did take a little getting used to when 4wheeling in the deep snow. But I wouldn't go back unless maybe it was a play toy type car. And then it would need to be a fast one.

Our last trip was about 400 miles each way up near the Michigan UP, not a ton of hills but definitely not flat. I averaged about 14mpg over the course of the trip.
