I recently found that my "baby it" driving habit has been hurting my MPG. I switched to an more aggressive acceleration and my MPG improved by as much as 2 MPG.

Here is my comparison.

"Baby it" driving method I would accelerate to 55 mph and I would take 1/2 mile to get up to speed. I would see my instantaneous MPG sit around 10MPG for the entire duration and the transmission was barely upshifting. Once I reached 55 MPH I would slightly let off the throttle and the transmission would maybe upshift to 7th and rarely 8th. This would result in instantaneous MPG @ 55MPH of roughly 25MPG in 6th or 7th. For my regular driving it would net me 20 MPG.

Heavier acceleration(feeling the turbo) I would accelerate to 55 MPH in under 1/2 mile to get up to speed. Once at 55 I would dramatically reduce the throttle for a second or two and the transmission would upshift quickly to 7th then 8th. This would result in instantaneous MPG @ 55MPH of over 30 MPG in 8th. For my regular driving it would net me 22 MPG.

I am curious if anyone else has noticed this?
I am not claiming earth shattering discoveries here. I was just surprised that smart/learing transmission could be improved based on my driving. I would love to have this trans work like the good ole days when you could feel it before it shifted.

I have a 2021 Overland Diesel with 1.5 spacer up front and Rubicon Wild Peak take off tires.

I have a 15 mile country back road 60mph drive back and forth to work and setting the cruise letting the computer drive the car seems helps a bit. It puts it in the most efficient gear. Maybe it just keeps my foot out of it. I have also noticed getting up to speed sooner does better as well.

I baby mine except for take off, I don't punch it but it get it up to speed. I also found that babying it up to speed in town is better and getting up to speed faster like out on the open road or interstate is better. All driving habits are different so this will very as well from person to person and depending on what all you have done to your jeep. I personally also coast to a stop with my foot off the accelerator and I time all the lights on my normal day to day and usually I can make my normally 40 mile daily round trip without more than 3 or 4 stops. I get around 17.2 mostly average on 37's

Simple. You are reaching the highway speed sooner and highway speed has better mpg. Spending more time at highway speed (ie sooner) results in better overall average mpg.

I get up to speed and set the cruse. I’m averaging 25.5 mpg. Summers coming and then I should be up to 27 28 ish depending upon what roads I’m on. Speed and long hills is what drags me down. If I can cruse at 58mph I can get the mpg right up there to a more than tolerable lv. Cold temps and winter blend fuel kill my mpgs. Even if I just let it warm long enough for the high idle to kick down it’ll struggle to stay above 20mpg.

I've noticed that same thing as OP. I can almost trick my mpg by letting off on downhill (even overpasses). Winter fuel killed my mpg. Plus Rubicon tires WP ATs. Stock tires was 27 almost now it's 23.5ish and that's just babying it. Hoping summer fuel comes along sooner than later.

I have seen better fuel milage going between 60-75 mph in 8th gear (~27 mpg) than doing 55 mph in 7th gear (22-23 mpg, on way to work 50-55mph). On mine it doesn't shift into 8th until around 60mph.

slow takeoffs mainly and of course you'll save more fuel driving 65 on the hwy. lol

I'm sure you'll naturally save more because you have a diesel though

I’m finding everything you folks are saying above to be true. Only thing to add for these parts are the steep hills, as opposed to long hills. I almost punch it to get to the crest then allow the MpG to recover as I start heading down.

Best I’m getting here locally is 22.5mpg.

Granted I’ve got big tires but I find 68 mph to be the golden mph for highway use getting about 25 mpg even now although I’m not even sure if they switch to winter blends of diesel in San Diego.

As far as getting to that speed moderate throttle is what I go with because I don’t feel lugging the engine is that great for the emissions garbage. If I hammer the throttle fuel dips to about 9 mpg for the duration Of the acceleration up to 55 then climbs. Moderate is 14 mpg and baby is 15mpg but that’s so slow that I can’t stand to do it anyway. The Jeep doesn’t seem to be happy cruising between 33&43mph so I’ll typically go slower than marked or look for cops around those limits
