I've been having sporadic issues with Apple CarPlay freezing and crashing when using the USB port inside the center console.
The display freezes and after a few seconds acts as if the iPhone has been disconnected; however, the iPhone remains charging.
I then have to disconnect and reconnect the cable in order to get CarPlay back online.

If CarPlay is acting up, then during that specific driving session, using Google Maps or making a phone call will cause the Uconnect screen to freeze within seconds in the same fashion as described above.

I am using the factory Apple charging cable and this is only an issue when connected to the center console.
If I switch to the dash port, everything works perfectly.

I'm looking for insight into whether this is a known software glitch, bug, hardware issue, etc.

Thanks.

I've heard of others with this problem as well. Solution was to try using the USB right on the dash - under the media section. Works perfect for me - so far..... :)

The USB port on the dash works with no issues.
I'm just trying to see what the discrepancy between the dash port and the center console port is with all else being equal.

Not a huge issue, but I'd rather have that cable resting inside the center console.

I have a similar issue with my phone. However my wife has zero issues with hers. Same model of phone same cable same port. We have taken the phone to apple and as far as they can tell there is nothing wrong with the phone?

I don’t think anyone’s been able to figure it out. Maybe longer run of wire causes issues? Different grounding? Different controller? Interference?

I've followed this discussion on the JL Wrangler forum.

Here's a link to a recent discussion. There are recommendations early in the thread.

My interest is more selfish. I bought a dongle and had to return it. I wanted to have wireless apple CarPlay on my iPhone.
My issue was that I have bluetooth hearing aids (Phonak Audeo Paradise P90R's paired to my iPhone SE. They must be paired for safety reasons. The dongle maker rep said that their dongle wouldn't work unless they were paired, and authorized return and paid me back.

This is some great information.
Thanks Dave.

I don't understand it but it seems to be working for all the members that have tried it.
For those that don't feel like clicking on the link: Using a USB-A to C adapter and a USB-C to Lightning cable seems to completely fix the connection drop issues.

The quality of the cable can have a significant impact on performance. The factory phone cables are not really intended for the type of use that comes with auto travel. I buy Anker cables that are designed for heavy use. I use a shorter three foot cable for connecting to the center console. The ports on the phones can wear and cause issues. They can also fill with dirt and lint which causes connection problems.

This is a factor that was taken into consideration on the JL forum.
I use Anker cables as well, but don't have a shorter one for the Gladiator.

Just to be clear, you are also using an Apple device connected to the center console via a USB-A to lightning cable?

I'd rather get a 3' Anker cable before I start playing with adapters.

I never had the center console USB port work reliably for CarPlay. I never thought to use a series of adapters. That doesn’t make sense. I use a wireless CarPlay dongle plugged into the dash USB C port. My wireless CarPlay has worked reliably for years until iOS 16.4 breaks CarPlay and you have to reinitialize it. It’s still buggy after that. I can confirm that the problem persists in iOS 16.4.1.

I have the same problem with both ports. Took it to the Dealership and they of course found nothing wrong.

I have an Android phone and use Android Auto. I had issues with reliable operation until I switched to the Anker cables. I'm using a three foot USB A to C cable.

I don't even want to try and make sense of that one, but it seems to be working for multiple people so there must be something. I am also on the latest iOS and I am wondering if it is isolated to newer devices. Some claim they started experiencing issues when upgrading to a newer iPhone.

Worth a shot since I'd still be interested in the shorter cable even if it doesn't work out.
However, I'm stuck on why there would be different results between the dash and the center console. As @ryanlsmith pointed out, I don't think anybody has done a deep dive into the technical aspect.

The biggest issue would be harness length and number of connectors between the port and the head unit. The more data you try to push and the higher the speed you try to move it increases the sensitivity to interference and cable related issues. It could be an IOS issue from the latest updates, and it could be some cable harness damage from the original truck assembly.

I took mine in last week for this same issue and a couple of other items just before my 3/36 was up. I will update you on what the dealer has to say when I pick it up tomorrow. Mine works fine on the dash, but I would rather not have that cable connected and prefer the one in the console.
