Jeep has a nasty habit of using its faithful to function-test its engines.

Is 2023 finally the year the Ecodiesel has ironed out its defects?

i want to get an Ecodiesel, I really do, not the reliability of the Duramax tempts me away from the Jeep fold….
You either like torque, or you're wrong ? Seriously tho, no engine is perfect, and they all have their faults, especially in stock form (Google Cummins heater grid bolt fail, yikes) but the ED in these things is a great engine. With proper maintenance I have no doubt that 99+% of all ED engines will go a couple hundred thousand miles with little to no issue. Internet forums are generally where people come to complain about problems and try to find solutions, and not come here solely to tell everyone how reliable their vehicle is. It only seems like the ED sky is falling because of the location.

I wouldn't even have bought a Gladiator if the diesel wasn't available.
This. I made the mistake of buying my third 3.6L pentaturd vehicle in my 2020 gladiator and man....I wish they had this diesel when ibought that thing. I would have had 40k happy miles. Not 40k rattly rough idling multiple misfire miles.

So what is scaring you EXACTLY, with the current gen (2022 & newer) JTD ?
I’m concerned about my truck being in the shop for gremlin error codes. This won’t be a toy; I need a reliable vehicle.

i intend to use the fuel additive everyone raves about and will be religious in following the maintenance schedule. In return, I expect the truck run well.

i understand that it’s not a full-size truck and I’m willing to put up with occasional de-rating during exceptional situations, but not while I’m commuting through the canyons without a load. (I live in Utah, so Parleys Canyon and Spanish Fork Canyon will be on my regular route).

I have been very pleased with mine.... so far not one issue. If I had to point to anything, they eat through battery voltage like the cooking monster eats cookies, while sitting if not driven daily. I do not drive mine every day and sometimes it sits for a few days .... though I've never had an issue with it cranking, the AUX battery is always low and takes forever to charge while driving the vehicle. So I've attached a semi-permanent connection for a battery charger/tender. Problem solved. Judging from the same type comments on the thread, seems everyone that has payed extra for the Diesel, feels it was well worth it. I think you will be fine ! Join the club !

I have a banks derringer tuner which adds fuel+ boost and this raises EGT's a bit. I leave it set to level 6. Climbing the I80 pass I do see high oil tempratures on the climbs but they drop on the descents. I have never had a derate with adults+dog+camping gear. I also hold 75-80mph on hot days. Around 240 oil temp degrees the engine cuts back on power. It continues to do so until a derate around 260 oil temprature. If you get a derate do not stop driving but take the nearest exit and cruise until the oil temps come down.

That said it does run hot and you could easily derate if you have a pass that runs for miles and miles with no break.

Aftermarket radiators should be out by the end of the year which I think will add some cooling capacity and help a bunch.

Honestly it will likely run well unless you inadvertently put bad diesel or DEFl in it. I think a fair number of the issues have come from poor diesel and poor DEF outside the owners control. If you are getting diesel from remote or wet locations I’d worry a bit more and stay on top of checking for water in the system regularly.

Love the JTRD I bought a banks Idash to monitor stuff but I’m at 7k miles in 2 months and no issues except a MAF sensor CEL that I think was a faulty reading and that’s not a diesel specific part.

My Gladiator Eco has been in the shop 4 times (in 1 year) and overheats when towing. I opened the hood vents. That stopped the "heat soak" issue when stopping for gas while towing.

It just started overheating driving from Vegas to Lee Canyon, not towing. it doesn't cut the power but it is concerning.

Would I do it again? Maybe? 14mpg while towing is sweet, my friend with a Tacoma and lighter trailer was getting 8mpg. He was following me so, the same speed, terrain, etc.
