I know, I tried to catch him, but he was driving away when I saw him.

Pointless, it's still a 1/2-ton truck, but now has less available payload due to the heavier axle and diamond-plate crap.
Does unsprung weight affect payload? Just curious.

All weight carried is a net reduction in total payload, whether it's on an axle or sitting in the driver's seat.

Sure reduces the trail worthiness. Looks as dopey as any dually that is just a set of tires added to the axle width.

If the mfg's would only make shorter axles and tuck it all into the same width...I know that would take cubic feet out of the box but it sure would look better. Personally, I would never own one of those "big-assed" things, I'd rather hook up my trailer. You are correct, I do not farm or haul, and my Dakota has to make two trips for the firewood but the job still gets done.

My first thought when I see something this ridiculous done to a truck is:
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. 🙄

IF they also accounted for additional breaking, frame stiffness, Suspension control, transmission cooling, and gearing it might help a bit, but your still limited by weight and wheelbase.

As far as the actual payload, nothing can be done to change the MFG's payload from the factory. GCWR is the gross combined weight rating, no matter if it's unsprung or not if it's heavier than factory your payload drops. That's why Rubicon's have a lower rating than Max tows, its nothing to do with power/gearing/width, that's all the same, it's just because the rubicon is slightly heavier from the factory.

I love the dually look, but I personally think the truck pictured above needed a flatbed if the owner wanted a more factory look. We don't know what goal/objective is, so I suppose the owner may have a legitimate purpose for his/her build.

Here's someone who did a good job of retaining the factory bed and keeping it more factory looking.

Yes, but all of those ratings are based on the SAEJ2807 standard, which was basically created to equal the playing field between all of the manufacturers. If someone wanted to install a fifth wheel or gooseneck hitch, then a dually would make sense to help stabilize the tow rig. At that point, the owner is mostly worried about axle capacity, not what the SAE J2807 rating is. A gooseneck or 5th wheel will transfer some of that weight to the steer axle and remove weight from the drive axle.

The Gladiator is utilitarian enough that it would be a nice work truck for around the ranch or to haul things in and out of rough country.
