Something else to consider. People who read Motor Trend to get advice on a tow vehicle, are the people that should heed Motor Trends opinion of its towing capabilities. They are the ones that aren't knowledgable enough to know how to properly tow.

LOL - well, they sure won't learn how to properly tow from that 'magazine'!
That's the exact sort of people that should NOT be reading MT for advice.

I honestly only saw Motor Trend when it primarily was a print rag as a time passer waiting in a dentist office or found in the back of a airline seat bought by somebody else on their way to Slack Jaw Nowheresville.

nope.

It’s a grey wolf 26dbh. To be honest I wouldn’t go with something this big. It tows it fine fine but with family in the truck we are not far under the gladiators GCVW. So I’m always watching what we put in the trailer for a trip. Total weight nazi when we are packing. If we do decide to bring a lot of stuff, my wife follows with your girls in her car. If I were to do it again I would go with something 5000-5200lb range. That way loaded up with whatever I wanted to put in it would be still be under or at 6000lb. They make a grey wolf 23dbh, which is the same, minus a couch.

Well that is what i was thinking and you make great points . Thank for your input. Looking at a trailer that is 4100 lbs dry and 6k full. Which is right at the limit. Thank you.

Sorry, the point I was trying to make..... They should follow MT's advice and stay a way from it for towing purposes. They would have accidents and give it an undeserved reputation.

Don't know why someone who is looking for a tow vehicle would buy a Gladiator. Yea it can Tow. But if I was looking for a truck to really tow. I'd buy a full size.

Well depends on what your towing. It'll tow what we need to, with the added benefit of being a convertible.

Here is what I tow (4500#/600#TW) . With the WDH the suspension/Handling is fine. The motor in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains in very inadequate even with 488 gears ( 35" tires). Just beating it up to maintain 60mph on some hills. 4th gear in the auto at about 4500 rpms. It is what it is. 260 ft/lb of torque doesn't get it. I definately feel like my Overland with tow package is maxed at 4500# with a Travel trailer. If I was on flat earth only, I guess 5500# would be OK.

If you want to tow a 3500 lb trailer a few times a year, plus be able to fit in any parking space, have daily driver gas mileage and comfort, and never haul heavy or large loads but want the convenience of a pickup, and is off-road capable right off the lot - then the Gladiator fits the bill wonderfully, and it’s a cool-looking convertible Jeep to boot. Tow smart and it’ll do just fine. A full sized pickup fails at the majority of those things, but yeah it’ll tow more than ever needed, so there’s that. And that’s okay if that’s what you want.

Full sized pickups are perfect for those who want/need what they provide - nothing else will do. If I were towing a 7000 lb trailer I wouldn’t be using my Jeep for that. I would have a vehicle made for that job. I used to have that need and I had a Super Duty van that got the job done. I sold the van once that need was gone. It’s not rocket science and it shouldn’t hurt peoples feelings.

I like to do research and it’s nice to have access to different points of view. Articles like this, forum posts, friends - whatever - everybody has different views and it’s cool. But at the end of the day I make my own decision.
