Looking to see if I can haul a mountain bike in the box without the use of tailgate mats, trailer hitch racks, or bed racks.

I mounted a couple RockyMounts DriveShaft Track fork mounts to my trail rails. They’ve replaced that with a new mount now (the DropTop) but it should work the same. I can fit 3 bikes across like this, as long as the handlebars don’t line up perfectly. As I have carbon wheels they tend to ride in the cab in wheel bags, but I’ve also bungie corded them to the bike frames for short trips to the trailhead.

For just one bike, I just toss it in the back laying down, and the wheel turned 90° to the side

Depending on your comfort level - I often lay mine down on in the bed, rear wheel in the front driver-side corner strapped to the D-ring, and (my bike is long) the tailgate halfway down. Tires, pedal, and handlebar end are touching the truck bed. The rest of the time I have an EVOC ½ tailgate pad I use. Honestly, I think the bike gets less scratched laying it down.

(Also I was doing dumb things and backed into a rock once with the bike on the tailgate pad, and smashed the front wheel beyond repair. Luckily the fork and tailgate weren't damaged.)

I've done the same but my frame was just large enough to require angling the bike or deflating the tire to get the tailgate closed.

Mounted a fork mount to a piece of plywood, holds my bike fine.

I have to angle my MTB (or put the tailgate in plywood hauling mode), but my gravel bike and my wife’s MTB both fit straight.

If you don’t mind taking the front wheels off, I’ve put four mountain bikes in the back of the bed when camping …. But I prefer over the bed, so much easier. Here are three mountain bikes and two dirt jumpers fitting comfortably
