NEW TRAILER, DO I HAVE RIGHT TOW CAPACITY???

Hey guys! I've looked all over the threads here and on "way-a-life", and I can't seem to find my ACTUAL tow capacity for my truck. I contacted my dealer, they said 7,500 LBS, but I don't have max tow, my sticker says 3.73 gears with "tow package" and class IV hitch which should be 6,000 LBS right??? I've read that Gladdy's are only 4'500 LBS, and you need an overland for 6,000 LBS, or a Rubicon for 7,500 LBS.... wtf???

We are in the process of purchasing a 2024 Forest River Wolf Pup 16 BHSW...

It weighs 3,662 LBS Dry, and the GVWR is 5,575.

No my sticker says that I have "Tow Package" which should be 6,000 LBS right?

I don't see how I would ever add 1,900 LBS of gear into this camper, I've done some rough Calculations and with filling the water tank, adding Groceries, Linens, some outdoor camping essentials and misc stuff, we should be adding about 750-900 LBS at any given time. So call it 4,600 LBS average weight.

Can anyone give me any insight if I do in fact have 6,000 LB capacity, or will I technically be over the 4,500 LB rating? Stelantis made this so GD confusing.

My truck is a 22 Sport S, Gas, 8 Speed Auto, 3.73 (Re-gearing 4.88's this summer), 3 inch lift on 37's....am I Good???

However, assuming that is your truck in your avatar, it may not tow that comfortably now due to suspension mods and larger tires.

It might tow your proposed 4,500 lbs. just fine. I don't have any experience towing with modded trucks, I know some here do though and can probably give you a better idea of what will work.

As Jeff said, ratings wise yes your fine.

Your truck will hate life with 3.73 and 37” until you regear.

If your going to tow much I would look at 5.13’s.

For most models, the tow rating for a gas engine and automatic transmission is 6000 pounds with a factory installed Tow Package, 4500 pounds without the Tow Package.

The owners manual should have a chart in it. The Tow Rating is generalized based on how the model is equipped from the factory. To get the specific rating for your truck requires the door sticker and some math calculations.

The 'legal' Tow Capacity for the truck comes from the door sticker and is determined by the factory and cannot be changed. The actual Tow Capacity is affected (usually reduced) by any changes made to the truck. Lift and Tires are the most common, and diminish the towing capabilities of the truck.

The problem with this oft-mentioned statement is there is no tow capacity listed on any sticker anywhere on the truck, only the GVWR and payload are given. The GCWR isn't listed on any sticker either.

From your owner's manual, pp 166-171

The rated capacity is for a stock truck, and will be reduced by your tires and any other weight you've added from the stock vehicle.

Now for the bad news.
37" tires with 3.73 gear ratio pulling a 4000# camper.
Expect about 7-8 mpg
Expect you transmission to constantly stay in 3rd gear, maybe 4th if it's flat and no wind.
Expect the life of your transmission to be shortened.
Also take into consideration the width and height of the camper. Any type of wind or even interstate driving and a semi passing you, it will get squirrelly quick.

As a guideline, I have a 2010 HaulMark 6x8 V-Nose. Per the paperwork the GVW is about 3000 pounds with a 1940 pound payload capability and 500 pound tongue weight. I use it more for storage of my Goldwing but have towed it with my Rubicon a few times. The truck will pull it fine, but especially going through the mountains here you know it's there and your MPH drops to 12-14 MPH compared to 17-21 MPG. From posts here, the numbers indicate that these weights are near the max limits, bt the heaviest load I've had in it was the Goldwing at 800 pounds dry.

LOL yes that was another fear of mine! I'm actually glad that I didn't re-gear last month like I had planned, now I'm thinking of 5.13's

One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is the towing with bigger tires and the bounce effect. We tow our #3500 camper with my JT and my wife's Durango. Hers is stock and it is more comfortable feeling. mine is on 35s and is a manual transmission. They have the same engine. Mine feels like it is working harder and I lose about 3mpg from hers. the biggest issue is the tires will compress and release way more than her low pro tires. It just makes the ride more bouncy. fine if I'm going alone or with the kids, but not good for the wife.

The biggest thing I will recommend are the spring airbags. It stiffens the sway and bounce quite a bit and when aired down, they go back to normal.
