What I can definitely say is that they screwed up on the install from a fluid perspective. My reservoir was pretty much dry. I had to add fluid a total of three times to keep the fluid above the MIN line. When I took it back it seemed to be holding up. I don’t know enough about these systems to say they didn’t bleed it correctly, possible leak, or other issue. I just know I had to keep adding fluid and when I jacked up the fron and turned side to side I got bubbles in the reservoir.

Well been driving around. Its still notchy but its prob 50% better. Its a smoother nocthiness. Not sure its worth going back again. Maybe its that Im actually feeling the tires during turning where the other box was smoother but sloppy

UPDATE: I just got back from the dealership this morning Sat. 9/12/20. The service guy I was dealing with said that the technician had went over everything he had done with regards to the steering box replacement and TSB and couldn't find anything wrong. The technician got on the phone with their tech support and they weren't able to figure out what was wrong, and there is something still definitely wrong. I left my Jeep at the dealership and their supposed to get me a loaner vehicle this coming Monday, which I guess I'll have until they figure out what they're going to do to fix the issues. On the drive into the dealership I still had the swirling/gurgling noise coming from in front of me and the points of resistance in the steering. One thing I noticed that I didn't try before was when the vehicle was in park and running I tried to jerk the steering wheel one way or the other real quick. I could feel immediate resistance in steering feedback and it wasn't just because it was in park. I mean it was like you didn't have any power steering at all. Anyway, I hope they're able to resolve the issues soon and get my Jeep back to me.

That’s not what I’m dealing with. But the more I drive the notchiness is still definitely there. It just feels less wrong. Im wondering if it just is what it is. I’m going to increase the psi in my tires since I’m at 29 all the way around and see if that helps

Well they’re re-replacing my steering box. So we’ll see how that goes. The tech said he could feel the notching on the gearbox when he was turning the wheel with another tech.

Awesome for you. I’m curious if it solves the problem. To me it almost feels like the pumps not giving it enough pressure so you feel the notches. I hope we aren’t dealing with a pile of other messed up boxes

What in the world is going on with quality control these days if it really does end up being bad steering gears?

FYI. I didn’t have this notchy feeling before. It’s new. So I went from sloppy to tight and notchy. It almost feels like something is loose in my front end or pump is not strong enough. Quick question. When you guys are checking your steering. If you are above the motor and have someone else outside. Can you hear the pump. I can. It’s like a gentle squeal.

Also there is no notchy feeling with the front end on a jack. It’s smooth as butter. That’s also what makes me feel something else could be the issue.

I dont know if we are having the exact same issue, but it could be.
I found that after the TSB was done, the dealership left a bolt loose. On the steering column, going into the steering box, there is a universal joint covered by a rubber boot. There is a small exposed bolt that holds the joint in place. That bolt was VERY loose on mine, which caused some strange behavior with the electric steering. It was constantly trying to adjust my steering wheel, and felt a little loose.

If that bolt is loose on yours, it could be causing part of your issue.
Hope this helps!
do you know the torque for that bolt? Mine was loose as well. I tightened it up and it really helped but I was afraid to torque it too much until I got the ft-lbs.

Geez, this is like the Goldilocks story. First it’s too loose, now it’s too tight. Let’s hope the next one is just right!

What you guys are describing is exactly what happens if the sector shaft is adjusted too tight. For those of you with this issue, will the steering wheel return to center by its self when you are driving? If not, that’s another sign of a too tight sector adjustment.

Another thing, for those of you with gurgling noises and low fluid. Put the front wheels in the grass or dirt, With the engine running turn the steering wheel from lock to lock five times. Does it make more noise at the steering locks? Not the normal pump feeling resistance at the stop noise, but a squealing or whining? Now drive away and see how it feels and the next time you Go to drive it, check the PS fluid when it is cold and top off as required.

I did most of this. Steering wheel returns to center. I’ve got adjustable control arms, caster is where it should be, rechecked all the torque on the entire front end, jacked up front. Ran wheels side to side over 30 times. Never stopped getting bubbles but my pump never made noise at lock. One thing I did notice is that when jacked up. Steering is super smooth. Even turning while stopped. Steering is smooth. It’s only while moving do you feel that notchy feel. If this is the way it’s intended to feel. I’m fine with that. But it just feels so wrong even though it’s gentle. Since it’s the steering box it’s kinda important. When I Went back to dealer. There’s no leak. And as of now I’m holding fluid levels. Dealer rechecked everything and did update(guess they forgot first time). It’s much better but still there. There’s either something off on the install or the box? The fact that dealers are installing wrong boxes, leaving reservoirs dry, overfilling them, using wrong bolts. There’s a huge range of what the issue could be. I’m open to any input you could give as I’ve exhausted most options. Next step is to pay a specialist on my dime to give me his input.

I don’t, sorry.
I couldn’t find it anywhere.
I just made it as tight as I could with my arm in there.

TSB completed last week on my JT. I report smooth steering and no notchiness. The tech beat up the sector shaft nut, but everything else seems good to go. I'll check the tightness of all the fasteners when I get chance (sector shaft nut, steering box mount bolts, drag link adjuster sleeve, steering shaft connector).
