Hey Ecodiesel friends...

How often (miles) are you changing your oil. Do you go by the oil life gauge?
Personally I have been between the 7-8k mark, and I tow quite a bit (3500lb).

I am wondering if I should be pushing that lower to like 5-6k.

Oil is black..... But that's no indicator it's a diesel.

Thoughts?

I've never felt comfortable with going too much over 5k miles, even if not towing. I know the oil has changed and science blablabla. I'm just old and it feels 'weird' to me going 10k miles like the manufacture says.

Don’t go by a mechanical devise, feelings, opinions, habits, price point, or “it should be fine”, guessing or what others are doing.
Send an oil sample in and have it analyzed. Look at real hard data to tell you when you should change your oil.

Oil's cheap, engines are not. With what I do with my JEEP, every 3K.

A friend with a JEEP followed the manufacturer's guidance. Rocker tick has begun.

Very easy to do as well.

Overkill, you betcha.

Read my first statement again.

My rule of thumb is to always change oil for towing around 1/2 of manufacturer recommendation. They recommend 10,000 with minimal towing. I don't know, but I've owned several diesel towing vehicles in the past, and always changed the oil 2-3 times recommendation. That diesel fuel and the burned fuel mix is much heavier in the oil. Yes, it's cooler burning and made to be a dirty engine inside, but if you're pulling more than 3500 lbs often and for many miles, I suggest changing more 2-3 times recommendation. Can't hurt, unless the dealer Motörhead leaves your drain plug loose! I do them myself.

The ms12991 spec is pretty hardy , sheer is the issue with our engines. I'm planning on running 7500 after doing a 5k analysis with Blackstone on the quaker I have in her now.

~10%. that seems to be about 5-7000 miles depending on how I'm driving it.
