Changed my oil on Friday, when dumping the old one in containers it went through a mesh filter meant to stop big particles and oh boy did it stop some. Any idea why it’s even there if the oil filter is working properly (mopar)? Any takes on what it is? Looks fibrous. This is on a 3.0L EcoD. My thinking is that it’s dirt and whatnot that made it through the air filter?

Are you 100% sure that that didn't come from some outside location like maybe on the pan you were draining into. The stock mopar filters would not cause something like that. I also don't think it got in through the air filter tolerances being what they are. Your filter should be guarding the engine from having any issue related to that being in the oil pan. Could clog the pick up so keep an eye on oil pressure!

That said I would probably change at 3k and look for more of it. Guess is whatever it was that contaminated your oil you got most of it.

Good idea, and honestly I’m not sure exactly when this was introduced. I think I’ll dump at 3k in a brand new container, assess and put it back in. I have to install a Fumoto valve anyway soon so I’ll do that in the same time.

looks like dog or cat hair, if you have old oil containers that have a light film of oil they will trap all sorts of crap.

You are better to cut apart a used oil filter and check between the pleats after a oil change then look at oil that has been transferred from different containers with unknown history.

Or the EcoD ate a small mammal for breakfast.

I also don't trust OEM recommendations of oil change at 10k, not for a EcoD, that stuff is nasty and rather spend a few extra bucks and change at 3500 miles.

I can't imagine that coming out of the pan and definitely wasn't ingested through the air filter at it would have been burned and sent out the down pipe?

I did cut my filter apart and noted a couple of shiny flakes that looked like aluminum chips from manufacturing machining. I'm used to seeing a few chips in the screens in my motorcycles, so wasn't alarmed. That what the sump screen and filters are for!

He didn’t dump it in a container then check, he poured it through the screen into a container so that was in his oil, and probably did not get there through the air filter, even if filter was compromised. If it was my Jeep diesel or gasser I would change the oil again after driving very few miles with the thought being that perhaps that was most of it let’s get the rest instead of saving the cost of oil and filter. Was it you first oil change by any chance?…..Jack

Sorry I was unclear, I poured into the pan/container, no filter. Then, I used said container to put into the now empty (new) oil jugs through the filter that came with my funnel. So it’s possible the original pan/container thing was contaminated and I missed it. I still have the old filter but since I’ll send some of the old oil (this time directly taken when falling from the car) for analysis anyway, they’ll let me know if they found troll hairs or whatnot in it ?

thanks for the input guys ✌?

Are you shedding your winter coat? That kinda looks like some of your beard! ?

I bet it was from your drain bucket, but if it was in the oil pan, at least the pump screen and filter would keep it out of the important places.

Not sure how easy the diesel is to drop the pan but if not bad you may want to pull and check the oil pump screen for any blockage. There is a chance this was something that was left during assembly

Wait, you're able to tell where the aluminum came from, how? So the manufacturers leave alum. inside the motors, so confused man please explain.

Just confused.

Can you tell us about your special ability to undertsand where aluminum came from. Its quite amazing to be honest.

Not sure what you mean by a "smart assed troll". Just trying to get some tips on your super powers.

It's probably from the filter element. I always see some brown fiber crumbs in the bag whenever i open a new filter.

The paper element appear cheap compared to my Lexus cartridge.

My initial thought was the drain pan had some fluff debris hiding and ended up in the screen just as the OP showed us. My second thought was if the drain pan was cleaned real good and sprayed down with brake cleaner, why not drop the oil pan and clean it out and the pump screen and show us some photos too.

We hear lots of people pulling off diff covers and cleaning out the metal debris and little pickers but no one has dropped the pan to clean that out. Do we know if the oil pan gasket is reusable? I also know my (gas engine) drain plug isn’t magnetic so I had one made for it. I’d suspect we’d see some metal and stuff sitting on the bottom in there.
