Just dropped off SandyGirl to get regeared.
I’ve been planning a Regear for almost 3 years now. Bought my first JT in 2021 a Sport S with 3.73’s on a 6 speed. It struggled going up hill especially loaded with camping gear. Was going to get it done then, when rumors of Gobi making a comeback for 2022 started floating around. The Sport S was sold & received my Gobi Rubicon in June of 22.
4.10 gears still on a manual were an improvement, however a trip to Colorado revealed that the 4.10’s weren’t going to get the job done. I added a winch & a LOD steel bumper to the front. Decided on 4.88’s. Hopefully the procedure goes well tomorrow.

Full review coming after the break in, then I can really dig into these things.

Here we go,,,. My 22 JTR has the 315 KOs and it's just OK. I want to go 37 KO2s that are only 36.5 and will do the 4.88s also. I hope the performance is better. Some say even better MPG. I am only getting 13-14 now.

Did you recalibrate your speedometer?

Right now I have the 315 Kenda Walmart specials. Not looking to put on anything bigger. I love having a manual transmission, but it can be underwhelming at times.

I recommend 5:13s over the 4.88's with 37s. I am very glad we went that route...this V6 needs a lot of gear.

The 4.88s with 37 is actually lower than the factory 33s and 4.10. The 4.88s would allow a return to 35s in the future.

500 mile break in period is over & I changed the rear differential fluid. Note my 22 Rubicon differentials do not have drain plugs. It was necessary to remove the cover. Biggest difference is not having to work the 6 speed so much to stay in the power band. Drives much more in line with my habits. Took it up to 80 last night & I was still under 3,000 rpm’s in 6 th gear. I’m not sure how much quicker it actually is, but it feels much more responsive. 1st gear is even shorter now & reverse gets a slight improvement.
Haven got to any mountains yet, but I’m sure it will be better. Can chirp the tires going from 1st to 2nd. So far 4.88’s we’re the right call for me.

It's not just about tire size, it's also about weight. 300+lbs of steel bumpers, winches, skid plates, bed racks, etc need to be factored.

hows the noise or vibes? After two bad re-gearing experiences I'm so hesitant to mess with my quiet and smooth JT

I would like to think if its Jeep doing the regearing and its significant enough, they would re-calibrate it as part of the procedure.

I have 5.13 and it's definitely not too much gear for 37s. Maybe with an unloaded Glad on 37s for commuting. But for long trips, loaded and mountain passes, people should go with 5.13s. Also, people rarely go down in size. Always larger.

I have an appointment on the 27th to have Dana Spicer 4.88s installed by a large company that specializes in re gear. But,,, I am having 2nd thoughts about it as my JTR runs so good as it is. True, I don't see 8th a lot but it accelerates great and uses 6th as the go to gear as its 1:1 for power and strength. My BFGs are 36.5 in diameter. Someone please convince me that going to 4.88s is a wise thing to do an will really help it. I don't want to be wound out in 8th doing 80 as 8th is a .67 overdrive and possibly the weakest gear. Someone that knows our transmissions please help..
