Hi Folks,

My dealer needs to replace one of my ‘21 Rubicon shocks due to suspension squeaking but says they can no longer get the OEM FOX units. They have to replace all 4 with fully red Mopar parts (see pic). My first thought was that FOX was a major selling point for the Rubicon trim level. Do I want to agree to this or should I try to get my truck back and find a lightly used FOX unit off a wrecked truck? I figure the FOX units are more expensive…if I go through with the warranty claim should I request some kind of compensation for the cheaper shocks? I wonder if the spring rates are still compatible with the Mopar units?

Thanks!

My first thought was that FOX was a major selling point for the Rubicon trim level.
Fox shocks as put on the rubicon were pretty but also pretty lame.
I have a set I'll give you for shipping. I had them on my 2020 Overland, it was bouncy and soft. I will not be putting them on my 2022 after taking them off my 20 to trade it on the 22.

If Fox shocks were a major selling point, people were looking for appearance and not performance and got took.
You're better off buying good shocks or accepting their better replacements than the Fox were.

Fox was just a name - they weren't made to the same level as after-market Fox replacement shocks. They were cheap OEM shocks made to look nice.

You aren't going to get compensation because if they put those on, they'll be better than your original Fox shocks. I'd take those any day over the Fox they put on.
There's a reason the MOPAR lift kits no longer comes with Fox shocks and a reason Rubicon no longer comes from the factory with Fox shocks.

The FOX shocks you have are not "TRUE" FOX shocks.

MOPAR gave FOX a list of specs to build the shock to and that's what they did.

Odds are, whomever is making the new shock for MOPAR got the same list of specs, but is producing at a lower cost per unit.

Now, if you want the true FOX shock, you'll have to pony the $$ yourself and order the FOX 2.0 shocks for a Gladiator. Which in turn are more expensive than the ones that came stock on the JT and a better shock.

Understood completely. Truthfully I did think the FOX units were cool when I bought it because I know very little about trucks (as opposed to cars) and I recognized the brand as very respected at least from me as an outsider. If the Mopar replacements are universally better I can accept that as long as there’s no harm if go to sell the truck later and buyers ask where the FOX ones are.

I have these on my Willys. They are essentially the JL Rubicon shocks and I think they are perfectly fine. I don't do anything crazy but they are not too stiff and not bouncy at all.

Unrelated but this does not give me a lot of hope for the day my Mojave’s Fox shocks need to be replaced, again.

But agreed, there are plenty of great aftermarket shocks available out there.

You are not going to get compensation for taking the red shocks as that is their superseding part whether you like it or not.

My advice is to either just accept the shocks they offer as a set or take it as a sign and just go your own way and buy a better aftermarket shock like Bilstein or Eibach that makes a decent replacement for OEM stock suspensions.

It is my understanding that the Mojave shocks are true Fox shocks, whereas the rubicon ones were just fox badged mopar units. based on the change in the mopar 2", i'm guessing mojaves will get bilsteins instead in future. How that will impact us with old mojave foxes? who knows. "expect to get screwed whenever screwing is possible" is my motto when dealing with car manufacturers.

Take the 4 red shocks. This way you ARE getting 4 NEW shocks instead of one new shock and having 3 worn shocks.

I wonder if the spring rates are still compatible with the Mopar units?

Thanks!

I had a 22 JTRD with the fox shocks, THEY SUCKED, the dealer did an OEM upgrade to different part number fox shock, they were better but not stellar...
Sold back to jeep and ordered a 23 JTRD, came with red shocks, I was pissed until I started driving on them, turns out I didn't have the problems on the red ones that I did on the fox shocks....

I was going to say you might want to look at having your Fox shocks rebuilt . I know this will cost you vs getting the cheaper oem replacements . Just a thought . I have the 2021 Mojave and I do not have a problem on how they perform .

These are what they are installing on all new Rubicons. By most, considered to be better than the Fox Rubicon shock. I'd just take the red Tenneco's and call it a day.
