Just how widespread / common is this issue of door hinges, doors, hoods and tailgates corroding under the paint? (Perhaps this belongs in a different forum but I thought it more of a general experience / opinion topic). After reading other forums and visiting FB pages dedicated to JL's and JT's, I'm seeing so many complaints that I'm beginning to wonder if it's inevitable for all of us.

What do you think? Overblown and exaggerated? Just as certain to occur as tire wear?
No issues with mine (knock on wood) but it's garaged and I clean road salt off regularly in the winter here in Massachusetts 20 miles from the ocean.

I just noticed paint bubbling on the lower edge of the tailgate. Mine was built in 1/2020, guess I better take it in before the end of the year. Maybe after the summer trips are over. lol

Do they replace the whole thing? or just send it out to a body shop?

They will probably just send it to the body shop for repair and repaint.

My dealer's body shop simply removed my 2020 tailgate for repair and repaint. That way I could continue driving my truck. They did a great job. Now, I'm seeing bubbling on the hood, drivers side lower edge.

Three months into ownership of a new one manufactured in December 2023 and I'm seeing white spots under the hood clear coat (hydro blue).

Anyone else have experience getting this warrantied? What is the process? Just drive in to a dealer and say "look at these paint bubbles and flakes"?

My truck has Colorado pinstripes all over it, I'm worried they'll try to act like I'm at fault for scratching it and potentially opening it to damage, although there are some spots that clearly have no scratches around them.

Would be great if they just redid the whole thing... wow. Now I'm daydreaming but nervous.

Check out the Facebook group "JL Corrosion Information (it's not the steel bolts)" which has lots of great info, and seemingly daily posts from people bringing their JL's and JT's into dealerships for warranty work.

Searched that FB group you mentioned. Holy Shit there is pretty bad examples in that group.

I noticed the paint bubbling on my hood and the hood hinges, took it to the dealer, have been getting the run around ever since. I took it in, the service guy says he will submit to Jeep to have it repaired, took pictures and sent it in. Jeep didn't like the picture so they asked for more pictures. Does the service guy call me to tell me??? NO!! So after a few weeks, I finally call him, his extension just puts you in a loop, couldn't leave a message. Finally got a hold of a live person, and get transferred to the service guy. I make an appointment to have more pictures taken. He submits them, and I still can't get a hold of him, when I do get a warm body, they tell me that I have to talk to him....... Still trying to get it repaired.... ugh.. most of the dealers in Southern California suck, they either have inexperienced service techs, or no mechanics, or both..... So frustrating!!

Sorry man, that's rough. If I ever do have to deal with it, I am semi-comforted that I live very close to two dealers where I can just walk right up to the service bays and be a pain in the ass.

Up to now my car has no issues.

But talked recently to a JL owner who made me aware of this corrosion problem and assured me that sooner or later it will catch me.

Since then I am thinking what kind of preventive maintenance could be done.
My plan would be to dissassemble the hinges, paint the unpainted parts and than put a kind of gasket between the hinges and the panels.

I believe the issue OP is talking about has nothing to do with salted roads or weather, and everything to do with galvanization. The galvanization occurs at door hinges, tailgates, jambs, and hood edges regardless of water or salt presence. It is where two different metals meet and the prep wasn’t done correctly. I live in north Texas and my 2020 JTR has been in a salt free environment since new. I have galvanization occurring just above my fenders at the middle edge of the hood on both sides. It’s currently extremely minor, but I am seriously considering having it replaced. I notice it every time I wash it because that’s when I see it most during drying, but not much otherwise. The only reason I’m hesitant is that I feel like it will just occur again later on down the road. As far as I can tell from forum posts and YouTube videos, it is somewhat widespread. Jeep now installs “gaskets” under all hinges from what I understand.

As stated in this thread, the corrosion warranty is 5 years from date of manufacturing (located on your driver side door jamb sticker) and unlimited miles, regardless of geographic location.

Below is a video on the same issue with JL’s.

Sadly this is the real issue... meaning, in every one of our vehicles those parts will corrode eventually due to the different metals being in contact. Put two dissimilar metals together into a water solution and you got yourself a battery... Similar to what you see with the anode in a boat.

I wouldn't touch anything. Gives them an excuse to void the warranty, especially if they see you painted.

I agree... it is the same reason that I will stay away from installing door hinges steps... I need them since I am only 5'7" (and shrinking), but not at the risk of the dealer denying warranty on those hinges when they corrode...
