Jeep is not the only manufacturer ditching car shows.
The Philadelphia Auto Show will also be missing displays from BMW, Porsche, Mercedes and Audi.
I half wonder if this is the manufacturers pushing back against electric vehicle mandates.
They were missing also last year from the Philly Auto Show.

Got tickets again for the Philly Auto Show next week and it is going to probably suck if also Stellantis has pulled out. The Jeep demo test track took up a good portion of the Convention Center floor space.

Government telling you you have to build and sell EV's and don't seem to care if you lose money on every one, Government doing all they can to kill the cars that sell and can do the job, price of all cars going up astronomically, its no wonder they have no clue what to show.

It's hard to face, but for most of the US, cars are a commodity. They don't want to and will not spend hours pouring over new car lit or buying a car that a lift kit or other aftermarket parts can be installed.

They are happy to have their black or silver vehicle with the appropriate nameplate that tells everyone who they are as they go from point a to b. BMW go fast vroom vroom is enough for them.

I think the part that bothers me the most with cars today (and more particularly ev) is that all the things I dreamed of as a child or teenager, are being torn away before I can get the opportunity to make those dreams a reality.

Not a surprise as basically no car company is advertising on the Super Bowl this year either. Seems like the car manufacturers are preparing for a rough 2024 in general.

I’m a car nerd so I do still like going to the car shows. We have one still scheduled near us next month - hopefully it doesn’t end up getting cancelled.

That was quicker than I thought for someone to start blaming the government. Start passing out the tinfoil hats!

But seriously, can we keep politics out of this thread? We're all adults, right?

I'd say it's not political. If folks want to make a statement into a political argument then that's on them.

None of your business.

When telling the truth in public is successfully labeled as “political” or “tin foil” language, we will have hit a troubling new level of thought-crime acceptance.

Let’s try and avoid the Un-personing tendencies.

Cheers!

I agree. Always have enjoyed the Auto Shows since I was a kid. I'll pass this year as I am confident that 75% of the vehicles will be EV related.

The same reason that I am letting my Motor Trend Subscription run out in a few months after 28 years. 75% EV articles and news that I am not interested in.

Hmm. Well let's just say I was real close to starting a business vetted as a disabled veteran, and a 'made in Montana'. However, after reading about new ruling starting this year for small businesses and the 'requirements' being imposed that without adhering to you cannot legally do business, I decided to not start a small business. So it is a very real thing. I dont blame any business for pulling out due to unrealistic regulation. The forest service has regulated itself to a halt, we are so ridiculous that we can't get out of our own way to actually fix the forest we are charged with fixing. And because of a bunch of policies, we can't even get out of our own way to respond quickly to blowdown or fires. Like it, or not - but it is the objective and unbiased truth.

Ah yes, this explains why Stellantis isn’t going to car shows now. It all makes sense.

It was in response to your tinfoil hat comment - not the car show situation. Although I wouldnt' be surprised if there is some bit of a connection there.

I haven't been to a car show since the early 2000's. They just weren't interesting. Seattle used to have a great show every year. Of course the big players like Lamborghini and Ferrari. But, once they started charging close to $100 bucks for entry, I was out. Dad was poor, relatively, and we couldn't afford that kinda cash for a show - not to mention Lamborghini and Ferrari displays got smaller and smaller each year with the Kia's taking over. Granted they make some nice vehicles now, but it just wasn't the interest. And food was no longer a thing either, so a 'day event' quickly turned into a couple hour walk which just wasn't worth the effort and cash and dealing with traffic to get to the city.

Conventions are a great big circle-jerk for large companies to strain their shoulders patting themselves on the back. It's a dying industry propped up by the hotel / convention center moguls. Only good thing about them is the economic boost they give to local areas.

As the Boomers get too old to spend significant money, and the GenXer's say "whatever", the Millennials will continue to shop and research online.

I don't think it qualifies as politics when government is mandating things.

He's just stating a fact. And unfortunately a lot of government mandates are terrible for business.

An absolute disaster. Who wants a rebadged Alfa?
Apparently nobody. If they killed the Dart tomorrow its dozens of fans would be devastated.

The regional auto show circuit is put on by the local dealer associations and to their benefit. It's a great way to pull leads. They used to be able to sell many of the static display cars off the show floor because they were headed to their inventory after the show. The manufacturer provided the displays, turntables, marquee cars for the circuit. They staff it with sales people and manufacturer reps.

SEMA would be a lot of fun. CES had a huge auto (AV system based) display when I went about 22 years ago. It was fun but I'm not sure what it's like now.
