Which DE Beach? Been going to Bethany/Fenwick for 20+ years and was hoping to take the Gladiator on the beach when we were there a few weeks ago....but never quite got to it. Didn't have the fishing permit and too lazy to let air out of the tires. From PA and trying to figure out a few day trips in the fall to hit some beaches.

Great rig! What's your cap?
That is the Faithful Steward ramp area just north of Indian River Inlet, have had a inlaws place at beach since 1978, they got me into being a Surf Rat, that house was near Bethany, they just sold it last year for insane money and we are now doing a large camper at a marina back bay of Dewey beach area , and actually like it more, so fishing Cape Henlopen more. Cap is first edtion RSI, I love it best thing prefer it over a rack and the other caps, have an ARB fridge in side and 100 watts of solar panel on the roof. Gladiator is the best beach buggy of all I have had.
I'm from Pa. also, we can meet up sometime, no more of this no permit and too lazy to let the air out stuff, once it's in your blood, you will crawl out to the surf with broken legs if ya have to!

Ha! I'm from the Allentown area. I was in a band that played for years at the Bally Carnival....I think it was one of the Church's.....they discontinued it maybe 5-6 years ago. Was always lots of fun though. yeah, I gotta figure out surf fishing!

Way back in the day, OBX as a whole had a small beach town vibe. It was desolate and beautiful. Over the years it’s gotten so built up and touristy, it’s a little overwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still fun to rent a beach house in Nags Head for a few weeks. But if you are looking for something quieter you’ve got to head south, at least to Hatteras. It’s still mostly Surfers and Fishermen other than folks driving down to see the lighthouse. But, I’ve reached the point where if I’m driving down to HI I might as well take the ferry to Ocracoke. OI is even quieter. People drive around the tiny town at the southern end in golf carts. There’s only a few restaurants/bars, the grocery store is decent and there’s an ice cream place. It’s not totally desolate. There’s a nice surf shop and a small hotel and rental houses, but it’s all low key. There is a vet on the island but I don’t know their availability. There’s no Super Wings, or Lowe’s, or Walmart or Mini Golf, thank God. All of that is on the southern end. Almost the entire island is National Park. You can buy a ORV permit for the whole island along with camping reservations on recreation.gov. Unfortunately you can’t camp on the beach. If I could, I’d stay for weeks. The federal campground is nice though. It’s got cold showers but at least showers and bathrooms that are cleaned daily. The camp hosts are nice. People are pretty chill. You cant have firearms in the campground and outside of the town, no drones. You’re not supposed to have dogs off leash, but I let Donut run around in the surf and play frisbee and keep an eye on him. The big concern is the wetlands between the beach and the roadway and certain closed off portions of the beach. It’s a major sea turtle nesting ground and the marshes is an important bird habitat, which is why there’s the dog restrictions. You’ll have plenty of room on the beach for yourself. If you’re looking for the best fishing possible than you should stick with Hatteras although the point on HI is where the best fishing is and that gets crowded sometimes 3 people deep standing at the shore. There’s a lot of etiquette involved in all of that too. That’s not my thing, so I’ll trade the best fishing for more privacy and space.

I think OI is really special, but if you want something even more remote where you can camp on the beach you can charter a private boat from the mainland to Cape Lookout even farther south. With any of these places do a lot of research before hand, for beach closures, hurricane damage, etc. Last time I was in OI, the ocean was encroaching on the roadway, significantly closer than the previous year. I remember not too long ago when you didn’t have to take the sound side bridge around to Rodanthe. I don’t think more southern islands are going to be as easily accessible much longer. Also, don’t discount the off season. You’re not going to go swimming in November or January, but it’s beautiful then too.
My first trip to Cape Hatteras was 1967, we camped back then, usually at the Cape Point campground (park service), then got more into rentals, then had a family house in Frisco until a few years ago. It was my uncle who first went there in 1957 when the park was pretty new, and you could camp on the beach or in the dunes. We had a big fight with the environmentalists trying to close down and ban all beach driving back around 2008-10. I worked with the groups fighting to keep the beaches open and one year made 10 trips to Hatteras from Ohio! (12-11 hrs) The Outer Banks Preservation Association (OBPA) and the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association (NCBBA) were critical in fighting to retain access, even though we lost some beach and for the first time had to buy permits. I would recommend anyone who drives on a beach or any public land offroad to join any group you can that supports open responsible use or we will see this right go away. For point of information the official name of the Seashore at Hatteras per Congress is "The Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreation Area"! They always leave that Recreation Area off because some want to turn it into a wildlife sanctuary and ban all ORV use. It was set aside for all types of beach recreation!

In my honest opinion Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills are very honky tonk, like almost any entrance to a popular National Park. The upper places like Duck are very nice, but I prefer down in the park, the further south you go towards Hatteras the better, it gets more laid back. The driving permit you have to buy is good everywhere in the park, from just north of the Bonner Bridge to OI. One point if you go early in the season the water is much colder in the upper areas all the way down to Buxton, that's because the water flow is the cold Labrador current coming down, below Buxton it's the warm Gulf Stream coming up, that's what forms the point. They meet there and turn out to sea.

OI is almost like a little Key West without the freaks and the bars. Silver Lake was one of Blackbeards primary hangouts. You can day trip it form HI, the ferrys are free, but get there early, the old Rollinson boat channel has silted in and the boat run is very long. You used to be able to hire a charter to take you over to the abandoned Plymouth Island south of OI but it's been closed since damaged by a hurricane a couple years ago. Recommend it.

Kind of digressed but try these old photos from 1957 that were my uncles, that's Kitty Hawk viewed from the Wright memorial., and a real Jeep on the beach, If you didn't have jeep air down, use boards! Camping in the dunes, and the point as it was in 57'

I think a Forum meet in Carova would be kick ass.

Back in my Chevy Colorado days we used to do meets, camp outs and cabins all the time.

Since there is so many OBX'ers here, maybe we should think about doing something like that? Who would be interested? Guys trip?
Rent one of those houses up on the beach. Split the rent. Problem is........the wifey would want to go too. LOL

Ocracoke is on my bucket list!! Worth the trip?
I just posted on page 8. It was really neat. We biked around town in the afternoon/evenings and drove right onto the beach in the morning. Wasn’t too crowded. I know you can drive Hatteras but I wonder if it was less crowded.

Any info on that awning? Looking to make something similar and thats the closest to what I had envisioned.
I will have to look up the manufacturer when I get home. It is the "knock off" of the ARB awning. I'll attach more photos to show how you can mount it and offset it to one side. It's attached to my rollbar and can slide within the grooves of the awning case to mount it to one side.

Went to college there. Spent quite a bit of time on that beach. Had a lot of fun and my grades reflected that. Volvo 264, Subaru Brat, '67 Mustang convertible, '86 CRX Si. Never a Jeep though. Yet.
