A young friend contacted me last night from Colorado, deeply upset.

She'd just received word that her family was holding an estate sale of her grandparents' belongings at the old farm house back here in VA.

She'd spent much of her youth on that farm, spending meaningful time with her grandparents as they went about the daily routines of running a small tobacco farm.
These were lower middle class people, so the estate sale wasn't likely to yield any Antiques Roadshow types of treasures, but there were things there that could be priceless to my friend.

We share similar background stories in that regard.

Her family had made no prior mention of the sale, and she had no means of getting there in time to claim some memorable keepsakes of their lives.

My friend lives a nomadic life out west, spending most of her time camping in her tiny airstream or staying with friends, so she doesn't have a lot of space for luxury items that don't serve the daily needs.

So I decided to go and to see what I could find that might fit the requirements of being deeply personal, yet fairly lightweight and compact.

I didn't really need the Jeep for its Jeepiness, but it's always a pleasure to drive, so off we went.

I spent about $70 total, and just picked out items that I thought have personal ties and meanings to her.

She was extremely pleased with my choices and excited that some scraps of days gone by were rescued for her.

I'll hold them until she's home again, whenever that may be.

The quilt is handmade by her grandmother. The cheap watches and jewelry were hers as well.
Her "Papa" was a WW2 POW, so I knew that the flag hanging in one of the outbuildings, and the patriotic tie pins meant a lot to him, and thus to her. He made the walking sticks from vine-spiraled saplings and gave them to friends. This one was in the house, so maybe he used this one himself before he had to go to assisted living. I believe he was 99 when the batteries ran out.
I've listened to recorded conversation with him that she did some years ago. Those POW days were beyond hard, and maybe it made him stronger than most of us.

This was my first estate sale. It will also be my last, unless some similar circumstances arise in the future.
It's not my thing, and I felt more like a grave robber than someone who was doing anything beneficial.
I think I'll modify my own will to say, "Take what you want, and throw the rest in a pile and burn it."
It feels wrong to walk through some else's home and buy their stuff for pennies on the dollar.

Drove from Ellensburg to Wenatchee WA over Table Mountain via overland trails.
Hey I was just up there a year ago. Pretty cool place. I want to go back and check out more of the trails. Headed to bumping lake tomorrow to do some camping for 4-5 days with my dad. I'm going to take him up to the two mine sites. I wonder if the trail to the copper city mining camp is passable by Gladiator. Last I heard it was a TJ type of trail.

I think you win good deed for the month. Man that was a touching read and pretty awesome to do that for someone else. Not a lot of folks I know these days would be willing to do such a thing for someone else these days. I can't imagine how it felt doing that, always thought estate sales were kinda weird but then again what to do with it? I'm the last of my family name, so some day I'll have to figure what to do with all my family stuff. Probably just donate it to those in need. But props to you, thanks for sharing. I bet your friend is really happy to at least have a couple things.

Brought the thunder mutt to get a bath and his hair cut after our child decided to pet him with a handful of oatmeal a couple nights ago. He wasn't a fan of the extra headroom at first but decided it wasn't too bad on the drive home.

Recovered a dead Gladiator the other night from the bowels of Richloam WMA.
Normally I wouldn't have taken the hour drive out there at 11 at night, but I had been on that exact trail the week before and had too turn back because it was too deep for my 5" lift and 4 new 40s and it looked like the pin was right there.
Halfway down this same trail I could see the water level had risen substantially and came across a couple locals also looking for this guy and his teen boys. They were in a pretty tame 4x4 F150 with street tires PULLING A TRAILER with a nicely modified XJ. That they made it that far back had me ashamed. Anyhoo, told em I was sure I knew where they were so they waited while I pushed to the spot. Getting there and there was nothing and the GPS pin was still a ways up the trail. There were you're tracks but I couldn't tell if they were mine from prior when I waded in then noped back out.

Turned around, regrouped. Got a call from stuck fella didn't sound distressed and confirmed still stuck.
Figured he must've went in a different way so we checked the other trail entrances and after getting turned around by more impassable conditions, found tire tracks leading into the fourth and final trail going to his location. It was a slog getting back there and at one point I izigged when I shoulda zagged and got buried myself but was quickly winched out.
Pushing further through some sketchy stuff at 3:30-4AM we finally found our crew camped out just passed a small lake or overgrown mud hole. It was kind of hard to tell the difference. He confirmed that he did indeed go in that first trail that I turned around at. I still don't know how he made it but that might explain why his Gladiator is dead and mine isn't. Thankfully mosquitoes were uncharacteristically absent that night.
The XJ was more experienced and willing so he hooked up the Gladiator and I followed.

Back on the hardtop about 5 and back home at 6.
Woke up later that morning to a snazzy new paint job.

Did you hear or see the wrangler that rolled off somewhere along Schnebly Hill Road? I saw a post about it on FB in a local Jeep group. No word on driver/passengers. Love that run, I do it at least once a year lol. Camping up top is always fun as well!

Wow! I was there 8/5,6 so I missed it. I wonder what happened
I just found an update saying that apparently this happened a long time ago and someone just reported it on the 7th. So the NFS just heard about it and closed the trail to go recover. No other news so I assume whomever it was got out and left and never went back for their jeep. Based on that 2nd photo it sounds odd to me that no one saw it or reported it sooner, but that was the update. Hopefully everyone is ok. Guessing the NFS will find the owner from the VIN.
