Out of curiosity what oil will you be using for the engine oil and when are you doing your first oil change? I’ve already prepared myself for the cost lol

Will you not be taking advantage of the 1st 3 years of free scheduled maintenance that Jeep is now providing on all 2021's?

Walmart brand 0-20 full synthetic, change oil and rotate tires every 5k. As far as the free schedule maintenance included with the JT I wouldn’t use it if they paid me, way to many horror stories of over filled, filler cap left off, stripped drain plugs, ect...

My bad, didn’t realize this was in the diesel forum, so if I had a diesel I would use Walmart brand in the correct weight, the rest of the comments stand.

Buy one of the most expensive trucks and use the cheapest oil.

I just done get it. I know the Wal mart stuff is made by Warren and is average to good quality. Not gonna argue oils.

I just can't understand why. I'd get the best oil within reason. To each his own. Ho hum.

If the oil meets the spec the brand is irrelevant, there are tons of tests out there confirming it, but apparently there is no Walmart brand available in 5-40 so it really doesn't matter.

Interesting discussion.
‘First a little background. I have owned a construction company for 37 years and have had all sorts of Diesel engines. I currently have an F-350 with the 6.7 Diesel and a 2014 Grand Cherokee with the Ecodiesel.

When the Ecodiesel first came out there were only 2 (I believe) oils available in the US that met the FCA specs. Then they found out that the Shell T-6 actually performed better than the oil they spec’d and allowed that to be used. I am currently using T-6 in both these vehicles.

The discussion on the Jeep Ecodiesel forum seems to be that Shell just didn’t’t want to pay the $100,000 to get it certified by FCA when they knew their oil was actually superior...it seemed to be a pissing contest of some sort. Interestingly enough when Ford came out with their revised 6.7 diesel they also had some obscure specification that only a few manufacturers paid to get approved and once again Shell didn’t bite but they eventually were put on the list of approved oils by Ford..

I do know that the emission system in the Jeep is extremely sensitive and the accumulation of various particulate matter in this (but all) Diesel engines is a major factor in the health of the system and that is the reason I don’t wait for the oil change light to come on.

Clean oil makes for a happy engine.

I changed mine at 4,200 miles. The analysis showed a lot of wear metals in the oil, and there were visible metal shavings in the filter. This is pretty normal with an engine that's new and is breaking in.

Now I'm on a 8k cycle since the manual warns that passing 10k can void warranty.

As far as oil, MS-12991 is the new spec but API SN is the requirement and the way the manual is worded makes it sound like the FCA spec is recommended but the API SN requirement is mandatory. There are several 5W40 oils you can buy with both. I used Valvoline MST 5W40 on my first oil change, but bought Motul X-Cess 5W40 since then. Shopping on Amazon for these oils is simple.

Motul x-clean 5w40 is the one you want, it's certified by fca as a certified oil. I think it's the same price as xcess on Amazon.

Diesels like clean oil. Look up the severe duty cycle and use that for your oil change interval, why? You are going to idle it a lot in traffic. You are going to warm it up and cool it down even though the manual might not tell you that. And personally I would never go over 5,000 miles between oil changes on a diesel engine unless it was a long haul truck or RV diesel powered, since most of that mileage is highway mileage. In town, lots of stop and go, use the severe duty cycle. Diesels are really better for over the road travel, using them intown, stop and go, it is hard on them. Oil Changes, and fuel filter changes every third oil change, with annual air filter changes, and it will go long past you. 30+ years owning, and maintaining diesels in personal vehicles. Used in work for 5 years, towed RV's and own diesel powered motorhomes.
