Isn’t the tow package just a receiver and trailer light plug? 3.73 gears is not the tow package

sure the base tow package has that and a 5000 maximum when towing. OP wants to tow 6000lbs occasionally. The JT does much better with the bigger brakes, better cooling system, 8 speed automatic, wider axles and 4:10 gears. Only the Rubicon and Max Tow have these extra items and they make a big difference when towing with the 3.6 gasser.

I appreciate everyone’s thoughts! I did some more searching a little further away from home and located a Rubicon in the same price range, but with 18K miles. That made the decision a whole lot easier. I pick her up on Tuesday!

I can also tell you I was looking at an Overland when starting but ended up thinking Rubicon cause of towing , but didn’t need low transfer case ratio and front locker, Mojave came out in 2021 and was a compromise between the Rubicon and Overland, which was way I went. Yeah, I’ve already had the thought that he may not get this one. It is LOADED, even has the trail camera. Giving a kid a heap to drive is character building!

I wouldn't say a fully loaded Jeep builds character... My 9yo will get my '05 TJ-x when he gets a license. It has a 6sp, 4.0l, and air-con... that should build character...

Seems way too nice for a kid to smash (everyone smashes their first car). Get them a used ranger/colorado/maveric and let them smash something like that instead.

That's fair... our TJ isn't a beater though... just not optioned. We've had it since new, and now only has 130k on it...

Rubicon, I have the Max tow and got it to use as a truck. I have dirt bikes and 4 wheelers to off-road hard with. The Rubicon has all the parts the Max Tow has, wider axles, more stable with heavy loads, lower gear ratio 4:10’s better towing and going larger tire size is not a problem up to a 37” BFG AT KO (about a 36” tire diameter). Rubicon has the bigger brakes and cooling as does the Max Tow. Plus the Rubicon has front and rear lockers, 4:1 transfer case and sway bar disconnect the Max Tow does not have.

So, towing 6,000 pounds with the 8 speed automatic and 4:10’s on Rubicon stock 33” tire is no problem. I haven’t had issues towing 7000lbs and 37” tires on stock gearing with my Max Tow.
The overland does not have any of the towing extras a Max Tow or a Rubicon has. I’ve driven thousands of miles with my Max tow and it is smooth as silk on the road. I love it. Can’t imagine the overland is any better and if it is, it’s because of lighter duty spring rates, something you don’t want to tow with.

All gladiators have the same size brakes. These are the only differences with the max tow.

Well maybe they do now but when I bought mine in October 2019 they had bigger brakes than other models except the Rubicon.

point is just the wider axles, better cooling system, back up camera with zoom and 4:10 gear ratio are what the OP needs for towing 6000lbs. Op is asking about the overland vs the rubicon… no other models. These are used Jts obviously. The Rubicon has the same stuff the Max Tow had only lower tow and payload than Max Tow because it is heavier and the rear coils are lighter duty for off road vs Max Tow rear coils were heavier duty for load.
The overland can’t tow as much as the Rubicon and the Overland payload is less at least prior to 2023.

Now the latest 2023 difference I see is the HD tow packages have the FNC rotors rather than standard.

IMOP, 20,000 miles extra means nothing to me (I put 50,000+ miles on my JT in 2022) I would go with the Rubicon for those things mentioned above as well as the lockers and 4:1 T-case. I have no idea what OP is towing, but if it’s a boat and your hauling up a steep incline out of water even on Pavement, yes you have to maintain a straight line, use the 4:10 gear ratio combined with the 4:1 (again not turning) in 4 low and this could make the difference between hauling a boat out of water or not. Then there are the Rubicon front and rear lockers (though problematic and jeep lockers are not for me) as long as they work there is no replacement for having them when you need them.

I don’t dislike the Overland it just is the Sahara of the JTs and IMOP is for people DDing them without towing much, carrying much or going off road As hard as you can with the Rubicon.

we can argue this all day long but what the OP is asking is which is better for towing and do the extra 20,000 miles of the Rubicon make a difference.
IMOP, and no one here is going to change my 2 Pennie’s on this opinion is that the Rubicon JT is best option vs the Overland for their intended use (and I have a lot of experience towing, road driving and off road driving).
