Jeep Gladiator Which Way Does The Spare Wheel and Tire Face While Mounted? s-l1600 (1)

^ Internet examples

I mounted mine with the valve stem pointed down, so I could check air pressure. Is there a certain way, or the best way to mount the spare wheel and tire? I don't remember which way mine faced originally.

I guess mounting it with the valve stem to the sky allows more offroad clearance, or really just less chance of damaging the mount asssembly?

Its a double edged sword on which way to mount it. There's advantages both ways. Its great to be able to check and adjust the pressure with it up there, but that also means that stem exposed to be damaged. I also would imagine water would pool up in the rim. Don't know what that could corrode but just thinking out loud.

Am I the only one who had to hammer that piece through the wheel of the spare? Not looking forward to getting that off if I ever get a flat, also not going to be fun when rotating my tires.

Can't say they all mount this way from factory, because I haven't seen them all.

But stem side or "pretty side" up.
This is what puzzles me, are they all mounted the same way from the factory, or is it random?

Does anyone want to snap a picture of their untouched spare?

Good point, water could pool at the valve stem if it is facing up, or ice and snow. But at the same time, the mechanism and valve stem is much more exposed.

No sir, tell the dealer you can't get it off?

Spare came off, when I put my 35 on a quadratec recon wheel I had to hammer that piece through the hole.

I had a late 90's F150 that lived a hard life in the salt belt. It's spare rusted to the point that it was unsafe to use partially from water/snow/salt pooling on the top. Took 15 years but it was really sketchy when I dropped it one day to check it's condition.

How would you replace the spare with an aftermarket wheel in order to do a 5 tire rotation? I haven't looked under there yet.

You can, as long as the front opening of the wheel is the same as the hub bore. That is what the issue was for aprez27 I assume

For me, I am not doing a five wheel rotation.

I ended up flipping my spare. The valve stem is now skywards. I didn't like having the mechanism so exposed.

I flipped mine so I could check air pressure periodically, and changed the wheel to a matching aluminum wheel when I bought 5 tires. I also ran a piece of chain over the crossmember with a bolt and nut under the wheel so it won't drop if the winch cable fails. If in an urban environment, you could also use a padlock, but their shackles are brittle so I would still use a bolt.

Good reason to get 5th alloy and do a 5 tire rotation

Grind the mount to fit thru the rim.

Never removed, only lowered once to install the cable lock. 2020.
