Yeah I had heard the aliens got tired of taking people in those parts and just started abducting phones.
Well now you see what you wanna be
Just have your party on TV
'Cause the man from Mars won't eat up bars where the TV's on
Now he's gone back up to space
Where he won't have a hassle with the human race
And you hip-hop, and you don't stop
Just blast off, sure shot
'Cause the man from Mars stopped eatin' cars and eatin' bars
And now he only eats guitars, get up

I use Google Maps with Android Auto instead of the built-in NAV due to the live updates and ability to pick and reroute for the quickest path to the destination. I also seem to get better call quality over the USB cable. I have not yet installed a holder, the phone just lays on the passenger seat.
This is me as well. I do Bluetooth mine up but it sits in the cup holder or seat. I use Google maps and Android auto religiously though.

I used that for my phone for a long time. Having it sit upside down with the cable connected seems to put unnecessary stress on the USB port. I stopped doing that last summer when I had to get a new phone. Now, it just sits in the passenger seat, usually on top of my jacket so it doesn't slide around.
The cables with the 90° ends are great for that situation. The one I used worked great until I started using the Android Auto dongle.

Law goes into effect today in Ohio making it a "primary traffic offense" to have a device in your hands unless it's in an emergency situation. LE has the right to pull you over if they witness a violation, and it's $150.00 fine for the 1st offense. Drivers under the age of 18 are not allowed to use a phone while driving period (yea right). I've driven hands-free for years now cause I find it convenient and certainly safer. Stay safe fellow Jeepers!!

Just joined and starting to have a bit of fun with the '23 Gladiator ... previously I had a '14 JKU and made quite a few mods including an overhead rack ( that's on the plan for the Gladiator ). Thought I would share an option for the phone ... and yes I'm over 35 but also want it charging while I push audio to the system.

Mount is Hooke Road modified a bit with an SP Connect phone mount with charger. We sell a LOT of the SP Connect at my shop in Fort Worth.

I usually use a Android Auto and a cupholder or the key fob slot. When there are more people in the truck, especially with drinks or their own phones I needed somewhere else to put mine.

Part of the problem is that there's not really a good spot to put a phone in the JT so you see a bunch of threads with, what I assume are, people hoping there's something better out there. That's why I started my phone holder thread at least.

Not everyone has a head unit with a good display for CarPlay or Android Auto. In some states, like Nevada, it is illegal to even have the phone in your hand while driving, but it is okay to have it mounted in front of you and touch it with your fingers.
I've got the 8.4 and there are many cases where having the extra phone display is useful. Navigating while listening to music is one.

Another is when you actually want a useful, highly detailed map.

Bottom line is the display, even in 8.4" guise, isn't anywhere near a 100% replacmeent for a phone display.

Honest question. I don't think I've ever been on a forum with so many threads/posts about phone holders.

What's the point? With either bluetooth or wired carplay you can see anything of value that would pop up on your phone on the radio display.

Are folks just like, driving around streaming netflix or something? :CWL:
For me it's that Apple Carplay has been really sucking lately.
Their typical QA is down the crapper lately.
The phone needs to be unlocked to press play in music, location permission is denied to OnX for example while the phone is locked (probably OnX's fault for being new to the game).
Just quick unlock, do quick thing, lock.

Also my EcoFlow battery can't be accessed from CarPlay, on a long trip I want to make sure it's charging from the AC outlet, I want to make sure that I see 12V draw coming from the unit telling me my fridge is drawing power and not ruining my meats.

TL;DR, I don't want to have to do it, but if I'm going to having it right in front of my face makes it as safe as possible where it takes minimal taps vs actually holding the stupid thing.

These many threads were somewhat helpful to me when planning on where to put my phone holder. Like others on here, I use Android Car Play sometimes but usually use my phones Bluetooth. Like most things in these forums, if the titles don't look like they apply to me, i move on to the next.

For me its one of the first thing I install on a new vehicle. I use mine for 2 main reasons; with my JKU I ran doorless/topless for about 100+ days a year, the mount allows my phone to be secure and not bounce around - I had it in the try once and it slid across the dash and almost out the Jeep. Secondly, for an app like Waze my phone can display the turn by turn navigation while the main screen is showing the map - I didn't think I'd care but it's a really great setup/feature.

I am a bit of a zealot about not using my phone while driving, love the my iPhone has options once I connect to CarPlay to tell people I'm driving and silence all notifications.

I use a Ram mount that bolts on top of the center dash where the little storage cubby is. Only like $40 on Amazon. Of course you have to buy the phone holder too which can vary based on the size of arm you want for it. I had one from my motorcycle I’m using and works great.

What's the general difference between using bluetooth vs. wired android auto vs. the wireless dongles?

Android Auto only works with a USB cable on JT/JL. There is an adapter kit you can buy to run Android Auto wireless, but that comes with its own set of issues.

Display is used for google maps and tunes. Phone for OnX or Gaia and I also have a tablet for either OnX or Gaia. Whichever one I’m not using on the phone.
