I know that correlation doesn't equal causation but I dropped my cams right after my 60k mile oil change at the dealer.

Had a similar issue, was out of town when oil change was needed, long story but didn't have time for dealer before the trip. Went to a quick lube place, what a mistake. Oil leaked everywhere, all over engine compartment. Luckily I noticed and got towed to a dealer before oil was completely dry . Dealer found that cap was likely overtightened, crushing or tearing the o ring very very slightly. New o ring, another oil top off, no issues since. Got a refund from the quick lube place

heyzeus...

Troubleshooting, regardless of genre, as a soft skill has seen a slow degradation over the last two decades. Most of it systemic in nature as companies of all shapes and sizes are forced into "by the book" learning and training. I've witnessed it in my decades in IT. But I'm lucky enough to be in a position where I can train my guys to walk logically though problems to identify root cause.. but then again they're not getting paid by the hour based on the problem. That's an asinine business model, but I know why it exists.

TL:DR, it's not a automotive specific problem
Contributing factor? It's not just points and cap to diagnose anymore, it was easier before there were codes. The radio used to just play the music, etc...

I agree with your observation but as another long tooth IT guy, I've also seen how integrating formerly standalone systems makes diagnosis at least an order of magnitude more difficult.

Just saying...

If it makes you feel any better, I had a Grand Cherokee that had about the same miles, got the oil changed at lunch and drove back to work then home after work bout 40 miles. 7 miles from home, the oil light came on and pressure went to zero. I had no choice but to drive the remaining 7 miles to my home after the oil was gone. The next day they came and towed it back and examined the motor, blamed it on the filter seal and said engine was fine. I drove it until it had 60k miles with no issues. They told me that if it failed based on this, they would repair or replace the engine under warranty. I was worried but I never had any issues.

Don't forget possible depreciation due to this work on Carfax.
This is actually a very good point..... carfax had misreported an accident and got the vehicle information mixed up, long story short... they had my vehicle as being flipped over and totaled(sever damage) dealerships would not even purchase it due to insurance restrictions and they knew it was a mistake by carfax... but it was left to me to fix, which became impossible to do, luckily I was able to sell to a private party and didn't have to settle for low auction price.

He was being sarcastic and beating others who would be SERIOUS to the punch. He's clowning around.
A few worship CF while others believe CF is a god that sees and knows all.
Well a carfax report certainly screwed me out of almost 1/2 the value of my last vehicle by falsely/misreporting the facts.... no dealership would touch it because they do use the carfax like a bible.... go figure

Yeah, I bet they also downplay Carfax when they are trying to sell it.

Reluctantly brought my new Gladiator in for it's first oil change, you know, the low "mechanic on the totem poles job to do. I asked to do it myself, documenting it and was told my warranty would be toast if I did it. Well, a young lady, who looked about 13 years old, did my oil change. Next day I see a puddle of oil under my Jeep. Guess who crushed the filter gasket? I had to use a two foot breaker bar to get the plastic filter housing off. Underneath of my Jeep covered in oil and Frame paint scratched to bare metal where all four lift points were, I mean really bad! Oil below the dipstick. Lucky I saw it! Needless to say, I drained what was left and did it right. Took lots of picks to verify.

I took my Jeep Gladiator Rubicon for an oil change at the dealership. It is one year old and 10,000 miles. I bought it new and I love it. Not long after getting the oil change and leaving the dealership I end up with smoke coming from the engine and the dash lights coming on, first the oil, then the battery light. I got it to the dealership and The dealer is blaming it on a faulty oil filter and showed me a broker rubber ring from the filter. The problem is oil blew all over the engine. Oil got into the alternator, they cannot get the battery light to turn off and according to them there is now a "knock" in the engine. This happened on Friday. They gave me a loaner and now its Wednesday. I am starting to panic. Can this engine be saved and if not, what are my options or legal rights? I'm calling tomorrow for an update, but my fear is this engine is either irreparable or am I looking at constant future problems and should wait a few months and trade it? Any thoughts or advice.
You didn't say how you got it back to the dealer. Once that oil light comes on , the engine goes off. At least that's what I tell family. If you drove it back, to the dealer with low oil pressure, and you told them you did, I would expect the dealer to push back on some of the responsibility.

At this point consider yourself lucky that the dealer took ownership with the issue. You really never mentioned how you got it back to the dealer with the oil light on or how long that drive was. I apologize if I missed that detail. I tell my family to just shut it off. I hope you continue to drive it with no problems. Mistakes happen, but damage could be minimized by shutting the engine off when the oil light comes on. Maybe the oil light came on and you shut it off and then had it towed back to the dealer.

A couple of people on the Z forum got screwed by Carfax the same way. One was never wrecked. The others just had the bumper replaced. Carfax listed them as rebuilds.

Don’t stress, let them order a crate motor and make it right.
If there is a knock it’s done…. Or at least it should be done to the extent that I would ever want a dealer mechanic to get too…. Pull the motor- put on a pallet, stick in a new one. (And don’t re-use the alternator).

if they don’t get on track to make it right with a new motor, or some other form of awesome compensation- warranty, lube package, etc. callJeep cares, get the regional rep involved.

we had a lemon 3.6 get purchased back. Very little head ache. Transferred all the parts over- to include a road master brake kit (this turned into a show….) but we got to drive a dealer loaner (another Jeep rubicon) stacked a few thousand miles on their rig- life was good. ??? No mountains from mole hills. Power of the pen and elevating conversations to the right level when things aren’t going well. :)

Hope you let the dealership know.

Yep, happened with my '17 Canyon. Had a kid back his car into the passenger fender, and someone else try to enter my lane on the driver's side fender. Both were very minor, and only required fender replacement and paint. Jeep dealer wanted to only offer $10k below book value because of the 2 car fax reports. I showed the idiot the damage photos, and they finally gave me what I wanted.
