Building my own flush tail lights

There's a chance I might. Might even give the files away to everyone to print their self. But last time I did that, people started selling them.

At the moment they are bolted in with the two bolts like factory, and I made the rear slip into a grove I designed. Might rework this but I actually like it.

I am an ME by trade and was going to undertake something similar but for front head lights for when I had my Tacoma. The goal was to use some 6" JW speaker headlights and turn signals.

The project ultimately died as I sold my Tacoma to get the JT. I scanned my Tacoma headlight with a makeshift Kinect unit. I even built my own printer (voron 350) in order to print the various prototypes.

Be cautious with sending folks part files. They will ultimately sell them. It sucks honesty has disappeared in this day and age.

Very cool design. I made adapters for the Hummer h3 to use 7 inch jw speaker/ jeep headlights. Put them on thingiverse for everyone to have them... Not much longer after that I find a place selling a modded version of the adapters.

I bet that voron is a beast of a printer.

I have a few resin printers as well... Thinking about buying a large one, but even the largest adorable one might not be able to print the tail lights.

The voron was my first printer. Everyone said don't build one as a first printer. I thought it wasn't too hard. Took about 40 hrs of my time between assembly and troubleshooting.

I am pretty technical so it wasn't a bad. Project. I definitely love the core xy setup. It prints so fast and accurate.

I was thinking about buying one, but when factoring in spending $1500 for a kit to build, when you can purchase a completed machine for the same price that prints as fast, I chose just to purchase another one. But at least you know every piece of your printer. I feel like I know every piece of my printers because I'm always replacing things lol.

Great work, I like the simple flush mounts with no protrusion. Oval style has been my favorite so far. I smack my factory lights all the time.

I would definitely consider ASA. It's very heat stable, doesn't really absorb moisture and is quite impact resistant. It does require higher bed temps and an enclosure to print well, but nothing too crazy.

I'm currently working on making a Mojave cowl with the 4xe door using ASA and it's a pretty impressive material.

You're absolutely right, I need to use ASA, sorry never researched it before. Same as abs but stable in UV light. Sounds perfect, and can still be smoothed with acetone. I really appreciate your input! Thank you very much

No idea on materials needed to bare the sun/elements. But what’s to stop the process if the end user wants to sand and paint the units in a uv coating or something that can withstand the elements?

I am desperate enough for flush lights that are (relatively) customizable in terms of actual light use, that I’d be willing to pay for cheap mats if I could get a pair lol

The first picture , I didn't realize it but the sun had already began melting my print, so it was warping away from the body of the truck. Have to use a better printing filament like abs, asa , or poly carbonate .

Well the filament that I used in the last pictures, it got soft in direct Florida sun and began to warp. So have to use either, abs, asa, or poly carbonate so that it can withstand the heat of the sun .

This is killer! I'm getting excited just watching this thread! Can't wait to see the final product or what you come up with next.

I agree ASA would be the filament if choice. Basically ABS with UV resistant chemicals added. Should help resist fading also if your not planning on painting it and can be acetone smoothed still.

My single and only complaint is you dont have them using generic lights. Would buy a blank frame/cover with no wires but ready for oval lights. Even at $100-$200 they would be wirth it at that price

I could easily do that... So far they are all using generic lights... The lights I am currently using are these

So far filament wise to print, it takes a full 2.2lbs roll to print at $25 - $30. So I would gladly sell the 3d prints for $100.

Just so everyone knows, I am very transparent, I will gladly share what it cost me to make the lights when done. But remember, that will not tell how much I spend on r&d.
