I have watched numerous YouTube clips of others replacing and priming after replacing the Diesel Fuel Filter.

They all do the procedure listed in the owners manual several times 5-10. Some open and shut their door each time. Some wait 60 seconds between procedures. And they still all crank for a second or more before the engine fires up. I have yet to see a video where it starts as normal after a filter change.

From my reading on CP4 failures, forcing air into the system could be the cause of one of the plunger roller-bearings loosing contact and the plunger rotating 90° on the cam lobe and starting the failure process. Instead of rolling it is now grinding sideways.

I have primed the system no less than (5)five times on the first two filter changes. On my last filter change I primed (10)ten times, waited for an hour. I did this (4)four times in the period of (4)four hours and (40)forty primes. It made no difference and still cranked for about a second before starting. Just like priming only (5)five times.

It concerns me that a dealer tech will just do it twice and let the engine crank forcing air into the CP4 and injectors.

What have been your experiences when changing the fuel filter and priming?

Here is what the manual says to do. (for reference)

Same as you on my end. I've been pretty diligent about changing them every 10k aside from the first one. If I do it by the book/video/posts, it cranks for a good 5 or 10 seconds. If I prime it a few times throughout the span of a half day, by the time I go to actually start it there is zero cranking lag as if I hadn't changed the filter at all. It was a circumstantial fluke the first time. When it started right up afterwards I just stuck with it.

Agreed on introducing air being a potential factor to early failure. I also run additives and haven't had any issues at all in over 40k miles.

On a side note, a CP3 conversion kit is on S&S Diesel Motorsport's radar but they don't have an ETA on it.

you can prefill your filter with ATF or diesel to get things primed quicker.

ATF has a little more lubricity

Know they used to use ATF on the Cummins, et al. Was wondering if that was a thing on the 3.0L.

and diesel motor is a diesel motor at the end of the day, your not dumping a ton in there and it gets cut with diesel fuel pretty quick. My truck didn't blow up when i did it.

Same here. Primed mine 4 times. It took 4-5 seconds before it start. Drove about 4 miles, shut it off, re-start it again right away and it's still took another 2-3 seconds.

Same…

Read the post by Keith diesel this am.

He has a very interesting theory on what is leading to pump failure.

I just drop and swap before the lines drain and haven't had an issue yet, she'll usually start in the first couple seconds.

Years of wrenching have taught me when it comes to preventative maintenance you get to be clean, efficient, correct; pick two.

Just changed my fuel filter, primed it seven times or so and if fired up just like normal. Took a shower and when I started it again it took a little longer than usual to start, less than a second but still longer than usual. Drove to DD to have coffee and when I went to leave it still took a little longer than usual. Is this normal or did I somehow screw up one of the simplest tasks.

Think temps have a lot to do with start up times. When it's warm. Mine starts right up. When the temps drop. Mine takes a little longer to start.

Hello Diesel friends here is a catch up to the on going problem. my pump went out at just under 15000 miles took 2 1/2 months to fix dealer said he never heard it happening twice, therefore i took it as fixed. 1 year later breaks again just like the first time. its sitting in Dealer they wont fix because its now a safety issue recall with no fix available at this time all new diesel jeep, ram ect. pulled not for sale. I called jeep they gave me a person that made no difference. HE moved me over to the next dept. they researched the background and sent it to buyback. THis is where the problems really start when amy gives me a list of things to get half of which the bank would not release to me. Im on vacation have to drive over to dealer to get a copy of registration out of vehicle while there a service lady said why don't they just call we can give them what they need. I was not very happy when I heard this! Ive sent at least 30 emails to this amy with information. left on vacation on the way back tried getting her supervisor with no call back. On monday i called again and they closed the case. It took a while to reopen with a new case manager requesting docs one of which the bank said to write out giving permission to retrieve my information. I sent, he replied you have to use this form i signed sent back and asked why amy did not give me that letter . after signing I re looked at it, noticed the vin number was wrong, sent scott a message via email and phone still no reply. The question is do they want you to get a lemon law attorney so they don't have to work, its very puzzling .

To prime it, listen for the audible change in pitch on the lift pump and you're set. Do it a few more times if you wish but once the tone changes the pump is primed.

Jeep and FCA (Stellantis) have got their nuts in a vise on this one. The techs I've spoken with want to fix it but can't and have work (and money) sitting in a parking lot collecting dust. Owners are paying for vehicles they cannot drive and cannot get fixed which adds to frustration and brand resentment. Until you've experienced a catastrophic failure first hand with no remedy, continue to make payments (or stare at a paid for boat anchor) and the manufacturer ducking and dodging you at every turn, you don't know the level of frustration we've deal with.

Those with diesel's unaffected (so far) act like this is no big deal and wonder what we are worried about...

My advice is to lawyer up. This is a slam dunk case and Jeep / FCA will do you no favors when you get to the table.
