Hi, like most of you, I have a multitude of parts and upgrades on my JT. I recently reached out to USAA my insurer with the hope of getting additional coverage after clarifying that USAA would only cover parts that were OEM and not anything beyond that. I have been with USAA for about 30 years and have multiple vehicles and other policies with them but may consider leaving them. Insurance has gotten extremely expensive in all policies and wondering what you are all seeing.

I suppose it's one thing to have to replace a light bar or puddle lights but if you are driving an AMW swap or something with 10s of thousands in parts and not having adequate coverage it could become an issue.

Just reaching out to the community to see if this is something common or other insurers offer? Do you suck it up and hope you never get in an accident (?).

Within the last year, I have spoken to my agent about purchasing additional coverage because I have A LOT of money invested in my overlanding build. State Farm told me that if I provide reciepts AND a photo of such installed on the vehicle, then it is covered by my policy with no additional rider, specifically any part or part/labor installed by a 3rd party. So my time and effort is not reimbursable; however, the labor associated to the install of my lift by a 3rd party would be included.

So yeah, talk to State Farm and see. Since you are also in AZ, you don't have to worry about an exception in various state laws...

I have a broker set up my insurance needs. I do know I have a rider policy to cover upgrades. I provide the cost of the item to them and they send me the bill.

I do the same with my tractor. All attachments are covered as long as I provide model, serial numbers and cost.

Some companies will cover the loss on modifications but they have limits. I was covered up to $1500 on upgrades or modifications.

@RidinDirty I should point out that with that knowledge, I built a spreadsheet of install date, manufacturer, price, etc. and took pictures of everything. Now whether State Farm actually honor that statement remains to be seen and I hope I never find out. I mean...I have an embarassing amount of Dollars invested in my build and I told the agent the number and she said it would be covered...

Mine has an automatic $1000 rider insurance. They offer more if you want it to cover aftermarket parts. Just either covers the $1000 default only or whatever extra you are paying for. Just need receipts of the part that got damaged to file a claim.

I actually need to call them before I install my bumper, now that I think of it.

so i have progressive and they allow you to tack up to 10k of insurance of aftermarket parts i believe. mine is set at 4k currently. When i get my AMW4x4 392 swap, ill move my truck to Hagertys. talked to em all ready and they have an adjuster come out and tell you options to insure a specific number on it. got recommended by viper owner cus KBB said his viper was only worth 30k, hagerty insured it for 140k. you keep your driver liability and everything with with normal insurance. but anything that pretains to your vehicle will be handle by hagerty if that makes sense. also if you do get hagerty, DO NOT SAY YOU OVERLAND. that will disqualify your vehicle. u can say u offroad for shows but thats it.

2nd State Farm for this purpose. When I ripped the ARB off of my Tacoma years ago trying to get it out of a ditch (don't ask) with a tractor, SF covered it all without question, even though I bought the bumper second hand. So long as you don't live in California, I'm fairly certain you can get a SF policy. The trick is to keep those receipts on file just in case.

Another poster mentioned a broker. Goosehead is really good for this purpose and will cross shop your policies to get you the best coverage. Ask your favorite realtor who the local Goosehead rep is.

Last option as mentioned is Hagerty's stated value policies (I think Allstate does these too) but last I checked they're on the expensive side for a daily driven vehicle.

Interesting. Did not know they didn't cover these, especially RVs. Guess my dream of buying an old GMC motorhome and turning it into a mobile command center capable of taking down an entire commie fortress deep behind enemy lines fun weekend travel toy may need a rethink.

I'm going to again suggest OP reach out to an insurance broker who can puzzle together a proper, custom policy. I don't think calling a big mainline carrier's 800 number is going to get you the custom application you're after.

I refer folks to Carol Frase at Goosehead- (410) 382-2593‬. She's here in MD but can find you a colleague wherever you are.

I have State Farm as well and my agent said the same thing. The only item he said is that it has to be mounted to the vehicle. I too have way too much in the vehicle with an AluCab and all the parts and pieces to that. I did also get an email confirming that I would be covered for all the items, I printed it and keep a copy in my Jeep folder with receipts for everything in the build. One last item is that I also have an electronic copy of my receipts in case of disaster on the paper receipts.

Electronic copy is a great idea. I think I will go snap pics of my receipts and embed them in my spreadsheet file. That way I can just shoot them a file if I ever have to!!! Tx

Ask your insurance agent to schedule the upgrades on the auto policy at an agreed amount. (Send the agent and excel spreadsheet with Mods and cost) If they cannot write agreed amount ask for replacement cost. Most will be able to schedule the Mods and give you coverage.

Allstate offers aftermarket equipment coverage. I know others do too. You normally have to supply the receipts and declare a value.

Haggerty offers declared value insurance.
Haggerty doesn't cover the Gladiator or at least that is what I was told. They told me it was too new of a vehicle to be covered.
