I found this 2020 official FCA video where it states that Select Trac was standard on Sport and Overland Trims.

Boy times have changed where NOW you can ONLY get it on X Trims of Mojave's and Rubicons.

Select-Trac was one of my requirements when I bought mine.

Wonder why they are so stingy with it now?

When I got my Overland (ordered 5/19, delivered 7/19) Selec-trac wasn't even offered.

I don't think they put into Gladiators until the 2021 model year as an option.

The standard 2H, 4H, N, 4Lo transfer case was all you could get until then, and the standard across all available models.

I wish it was an option when I ordered mine. I had Selec-trac in two of my Grand Cherokees, my '96 and my '03. LOVED it. Wish I had it in mine but, now that I'm retired, I really don't have to venture out when the weather is inclement or when it's snowy so, there's that.

My whole Jeep experiences from 25 year ago (offroading), was solid axles and U-joints.😎

Buying an X and looking underneath and seeing something similar to a what I’d call a CV joint - totally surprised me. 😳 I started having flashbacks of IFS rigs and folks blowing CV joints on the trails.

I had 4WD Auto in my previous Canyon and loved it. I was also surprised to see the X had it. I love it…… use it all the time in the rain.

Honestly? If I were building a rig for offroading - I’d NEVER want those CV joints.

It was optional for my '20 Max Tow. Earlier it was installed randomly.

Definitely not standard on the 2020. My sport did not have it. My 2024 mojave does. I wouldn't pay for it but it's standard on X trim. I really don't know when I would use it. Unless I drive north I winter (never gonna happen)

Those first year promo videos for the JT launch have a bit of inaccurate info that never made it to production for 2020 model year. Select Trac from the order guides I have did not show up until the 2021 model year as an option.

I can also remember the tow packages were suppose to have a brake controller from early press releases but that also never happened.

You can throw the regular t-case into 4Hi on the fly, I guess having the auto-4wd eliminates one step but it’s always been a “meh, one more thing that could break” item for me. My only experience is from the WJ iteration of it though.

louis. It's more than just 4hi. It's designed to be used on paved roads.

This. I had Selec Trac on my 2021 Willys and in "4Auto" it drove like a normal 2WD and only engage 4WD when it detected front wheel slippage and used a clutch based system in the transfer case. It was nice if one was in spotty inclement transition type weather.

I ordered Selec Trac on my 2021 Sport S Max Tow for the convenience and to eliminate the front axle end U Joints. The Cardin joints are stronger and won’t rust/stiffen like the U Joint requiring replacement.

Living in MT, we have winter "shoulder" seasons. Late Oct to about now is this years with multiple 6 inch snows that don't melt. Late March to May also... You get a mile of clear road and a mile of road ranging from slush to ice spots. I've had the "regular" part time 4WD, no LSD on a Ram 1500 and it sucked. Then I got LSD on a 2015 1500 and it was a big help in SOME circumstances then I had the auto 4WD on a 2021 and it was heaven. And so, it became a requirement for future Rams/Jeeps. I have a Chicane under a highway I do every day that illustrates the weaknesses of regular part time 4WD every time you drive it. Our mailboxes are on a slope we all polish the ice daily. You get real tired of reaching for the button twenty times a day or taking your chances... Selec Trac, never a worry and obviously superior to whatever everyone else is driving.

They don't deal with snow here in MT like back east. No salt or chemicals. You plow it down to about two inches on the road and that's it. Throw gravel/dirt into the corners on the hills and we are good to go till it's gone in late April. We citizens get to wear it down to first clear tire lanes then eventually with the sun's help it eventually clears by sometime in April or early May. And don't forget those minus 41 farenheit days in late Jan/Feb.

I use it all the time in the rain. Wet Roads….stop signs…. Heavy traffic..(especially on an incline).. You can’t hit the gas without the rear tires spinning.

The one intersection by my house is on an incline. I’ve been in 2WD and got only halfway thru the intersection (making a left turn)cuz the rear wheels spinning like crazy. Seeing cars coming towards you while you’re not really moving ….the brain doesn’t work fast enough to tell you “Hey buddy, let off the gas”….. Luckily, I’ve never been in an accident. So Yea….I always use it in the rain. Doesn’t hurt to use it and keep systems lubricated. If you don’t use it, you lose it.

They’re not the same thing.
When you engage 4Hi - All 4 wheels are driving.
When you engage 4Auto - it’s driving in 2WD only until it senses slippage. When it senses slippage, it sends power to the front wheels.
