I've got a 500 amp solenoid for my winch. I want to wire it in near the battery, but seem to be lacking room. Has anyone got a description/pictures of what they have done? I've been trying to figure out a nice install and am a bit stumped.

Thanks.

First pic is the hinge I used. Kinda like it in the end. Second is with the circuit breaker for the 56 ga wire going to the bed. Both the winch and that feed are off the solenoid, so I can leave them turned off most of the time and only on when I want to winch or air up. I re-wired my compressor with an Anderson connector that now plugs into the bed where the knockout is.

Happy with the results, just not the 3 hours it took to run the 6 G1 and finish up. Definitely am older than I used to be.

I just have my battery disconnect there. The solenoid is on the winch controller on top of the winch. I saw in the instructions that you can mount it remotely, but there’s no room. These DOHC engines take up a ton of space. I see now how they fit 6.4ls under the hood.

What we're showing is the disconnect - a solenoid to disconnect battery power from the front of the truck/Jeep.
Are you running a disconnect under the hood and another in the form of a solenoid on the winch?
Or are you running a full battery disconnect that disconnects the batteries from the whole truck?

Here’s my less than beautiful DIY attempt at simplifying the winch solenoid and aux switch wiring. I used 1/8” ABS board and a Blue Sea terminal block. No issues since installation a year ago.

I think you are confusing what the discussion here is - we are talking disconnect when we say solenoid.
So you are not operating a solenoid to disconnect the winch, you are using a manual disconnect switch.
Some of us are using a solenoid to take the place of the manual disconnect switch.

The solenoid is on the winch controller on top of the winch. I saw in the instructions that you can mount it remotely, but there’s no room.
The solenoid we are talking about isn't the one in the winch, it's a disconnect solenoid. So instead of the manual switch you call the battery disconnect, we are using a solenoid.
So for the sakes of the discussion at hand - we are indeed talking battery disconnect, not relocating any part from the winch itself to the engine bay.

I started with the manual disconnect that came with my winch:

Then for my 2022 - I did not use that manual winch disconnect switch, I used a solenoid like they are talking about here, to replace that manual switch -

And to add to that, the manual switch is activated by hand while the solenoid is activated with one of the auxiliary switches in the cab. You put the disconnect in line on the hit cable from the winch to the battery then ground the disconnect to the vehicle ground and the disconnect hot wire to the aux switch.

I am confused. What do you do, press a button to power it on and off?

I personally like the manual disconnect with something as powerful as a winch. It’s a lot like the manual ones we have on our classic cars. Super simple and reliable.

The solenoid is low power and is turned on and off with the switch on the dash. It sits on the winch power cable to turn the winch power supply off and on. With the solenoid (disconnect) the power from the battery is stopped at the disconnect until you turn it on and then the power runs through the disconnect and is supplied to the winch.

Yes. I have a switch in the truck that I can turn on and off the power to my winch (and bed power the way mine is wired) instead of having to open the hood. It's a 500 amp solenoid, so plenty of capability.

Yeah, I use aux switch 3 to trigger the solenoid and connect the winch back to the battery.
Many of the solenoids shown here are sold by Warn and have many Jeep users behind them.
Others opt for other types of solenoids - but the all accomplish the same thing - cut power to the front of the vehicle and the winch.
